All my favorite parts cut out

My three favorite elements of the book were

1) Max boxing with the Fuhrer in the basement

2) The Word Shaker

3) Liesel defending Max in the Jew parade.

I understand that books translated to movies have to be different, especially a book as long and with as many elements as The Book Thief. I understood why they couldn't have more of Death's narration (especially his talk about the colors and the visit to Auschwitz, another two of my favorite parts).

But I did feel that they could have brought in a lot of the richer parts of the stories that they left out instead. I would have loved to see Max's daymares about Hitler, the fist fighting. The sharing of the nightmares, Alex Steiner getting sent to war for not letting Rudy leave, Rudy giving the American pilot the teddy bear. In fact, I almost feel like they went for every cliche that the book had to offer instead of what was different about it. Though the acting was great, overall I was disappointed by the movie. It had about a quarter of the power that the book does.
