Why cast this girl

Sophie Nelisse was a pretty obscure child actress prior to teh book thief, with only 1 major role in Mr. Lazhar. Why did they decide to cast her from Quebec instead of going with a local usaian or authentic German child actor?

Well, USA-ian. Someone from USA.
Can't call usaians "American" because "American" is too generally inclusive. Canadians are American, so are Peruvians.

reply

American does NOT refer to Canadians. I've only heard that in Europe where they think American means North American. Canadians are not Americans. Americans live in the USA. Canadians live in Canada. You're welcome.

reply

It's not that "they think" American means North American (as if they were some sort of morons that know nothing about geography) it's that America includes North America and South America.

What continent is Québec in? Europe? Asia? Are they Europeans? Are they Asians? Africans? And Peru? Are Peruvians Australian?

I understand that the name of your country (United States) does not allow for an easy demonym and you are entitled to call yourselves whatever. But for the rest of the world America is the continent and US is the country. British are Europeans, Chinese are Asians, Moroccans are African, and Canadians are American.

Oh this is wrong on so many levels. We're North American. Canadians have never been called American. Only ignorant people would dare call us American.

Getting back to why they cast Sophie. Ever thought of the idea that she was actually best for the part? Just a hunch.

reply

Then I guess Finnish are North European and only ignorant people would dare call them European.

reply

It may work differently where you are from but here in North America we have a different way if things.

reply

The North and South part of North and South American comes from the name of the continents on which the people reside, not a geographic description of their relative location on the continents. So your argument makes absolutely no sense at all.

reply

Actually, there are two continents with the word 'America' in them... North America and South America... therefore it is easy: Canadians are North American, Peruvians are South American. There are no North Europe and South Europe continents. Therefore, people from the United States of America are American.

reply

I know, a little late to the party! - Here's where the Geography lesson comes in... Where I am from, for example, there are only 6 continents (Asia, Africa, America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia), in the US there are seven (America is split into North and South America).
tl;dr be more tolerant, in the end it is the same continent, etc.

reply

That's interesting. Where is that?

Why do you say "in the end it is the same continent", btw? By that argument, Africa, Europe, and Asia are one continent, since you could travel among them without crossing an ocean, no?

reply

What happened to Central America?

reply

What continent is Québec in?

I live in Quebec. The continent is North America. I am a Quebecker and a Canadian. No one in Canada calls themselves American. That is just ridiculous.

reply

If you live in Quebec then you should learn to spell QUEBECER
You don't call yourself Ckanadian or Americkan

Actually either is correct (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/quebecker). No need to be snarky; it just shows your ignorance.

I agree with you, but the use of USA-ian (not your term) is downright silly. How about US citizen instead?

reply

And Mexico is part of North America, too. 121 million Mexicans will be very surprised to learn they're actually Americans!

reply

Yes if Mexicans were called Americans I'd say a bunch of anti-immigration people would be pretty P.O'd about that generalization as well.

reply

No, you are completely wrong. There are continents called North America and South America.

There is a country called America, made up of many united states. It is The United States of America. The country is not called "United States". Seriously, dude.

Being North American is very different from being simply "American".

reply

America is not the name of the continent. Two of the 7 continents are North America & South America.

reply

I think it might come from Spanish. In Latin America some people can get a bit offended by US citizens calling themselves americanos, as Latin Americans believe themselves to be americanos as well, as they are also from the Americas. In Spanish there is a specific word for a person from the USA, which is estadounidense. "USAian" seems like someone trying to find an English translation of estadounidense. It is a horrible word though.

reply

Canada is in North America smart one

reply

I don't think it matters if Sophie Nelisse was an obscure actress prior to Monsieur Lazhar. The fact is that M. Lazhar was well-received at many film festivals, and was nominated as Best Foreign language film at the Academy Awards. Therefore many people who matter in the movie industry saw her performance. She was perfect for the role in The Book Thief, in my opinion.

I wonder if you have any idea just how many Canadians are starring in American movies and TV shows. There are many, and you would likely be surprised by some of the names.

Also, to reference your later posts, no one is "American" except for people from the USA. All of us in North and South America are North Americans and South Americans. Canadians are Canadian. usaian is just not a word.

reply

Sophie won two awards for that film so that is probably why

reply

I can't recall exactly but I think her performance in Monsieur Lazhar how she got the part, sometimes people are chosen simply because the director has seen them in a movie they liked.
Though as for american actors, movies of this nature tend to avoid americans because USA culture and disney acting has been too infused into their performances for them to do a good job in the role.

reply

I thought she was perfect for this role and did a superb job

reply

she could barely get through a sentence without her voice changing between 2 or 3 different accents

I got girls up here do more tricks than a god damn monkey on a hundred yards of grape vine.

reply

She was a captivating presence in the film. The role is that of a child and it's called ACTING. Makes sense to me.

reply

looks like I fell for your trap... I feel sorry for you cause you had to be like that to be happy... good luck with your life :)

reply

Because she was perfect for the role of Liesel. What a wonderful young actress!

reply

Because is/was just about the cutest kid I can imagine. And her acting was decent. Other than that, I have no idea.
