Am I the only one who think Haruhi is a bitch?

Before anyone feeds me to the wolves, I'm not trying to be a troll or to piss anyone off. I just started watching the show, and I can't help but feel Haruhi, although an interesting and talented character, is a flat-out bitch. Granted, I haven't watched all the episodes, so I might be missing something. But, I really hate how she treats people (especially Mikuru). It's like Haruhi believes that she is God's greatest gift and that she's better than any human on Earth. I don't particularly get along with people like that.

Also, the episode where she blackmails the computer club to give her their best computer, as well hooking up an internet line for the SOS Brigade, really made me dislike her. I won't lie, I did laugh because I thought it was amusing, but at the same time, I wanted somebody (like Kyon) to hit her.

I apologize if I angered anyone. Like I said, I don't know the whole story yet. As for why I'm watching the series, it's because I find it kind of interesting. Although, I think the title character is a bit unlikeable for my taste.

Lol, well you're sort of right.

More like she is GOD!

reply

You're not alone, I don't like her at all, but I do like everyone else. Mikuru is adorable, so I just focus on her.

actually Kyon more or so should be the character that should be centered more. but well without haruhi, how would the show go? besides i loved it when she black mailed the computer club^^ but yeah i'm mad at her, SHE GETS MORE BOOB ACTION THAN ANY OF THE GUYS IN THE FREAKING SHOW!!!!

reply

Ha, ha, I loved those comments. The OP is so astute without knowing it!

Watch the whole show, then think again about Haruhi - she is like she is for a VERY good reason ;)

Let's just say she is a girl who has 'boy issues' and is having some difficulty in working through them... much to the concern of everyone else on the planet... ;)

I think she's adorable. The episode set in winter when Kyon goes to get the heater from the electrical store across town at the bottom of that god-awful hill is one of my favourites. Very little happens in that episode and it's beautifully under-stated, but Haruhi at the end of it is just so perfectly kawaii and adorable.

I have just watched this series again for about the 5th time and it never loses a scrap of its appeal, it's simply a brilliantly written and very clever show, it's about my 4th or 5th favourite anime series of all time.

Wow, if you dislike it that much why are you even here? Flamer.

Clearly you don't appreciate original and well written anime. Your dislike of EVA merely confirms that.

Uh...his dislike of EVA shows that he DOES appreciate well written anime. EVA was a mess that was ruined even more by the lack of a budget.

And before you get on me, I saw all 26 episodes, rebirth, and End of Evangelion.

To the OP, I too though Haruhi was mean at first, but I grew to like her character more as the show went on. Get further into it and your opinion may change.

I, in the meantime, am waiting for season 2.

All the cool kids love to hate on Evangelion... Personally I can't wait until everyone quits ganging up on one of the greatest Anime ever made.

Witty closing remarks have been replaced by massive head trauma and severe hemorrhaging.

Yes, of course, watching the entirety of an only-fourteen-episodes-long series to base whether it's good or not on the entirety is, no doubt, downright idiotic.

I feel truly enlightened now. Thank you.

Um... whoever that was deleted their post. Maybe they woke up sober the next day and realised their mistake? ;)

Or perhaps the admins removed it? Who knows, one of life's little mysteries...

Later in the anime past episode 6 (chronological order)and in the novels she gets more character development and becomes more likable. An example would be how protective she is of yuki and mikiru. Currently the point I am reading the 8th book in the series which takes place in March, 11 months after the start of the series and the last time Haruhi did anything bitchy would have been while she was making the movie for the school festival which takes place in October.

Update: I'm actually growing to like Haruhi as time goes on. Why? I don't know! I guess it's because of her charm. The whole time I should have just kept reminding myself this was only fiction, and I shouldn't get worked up over a character. But, upon watching more episodes, I kinda like Haruhi, although Kyon and Mikiru still remain my favorites.

Well she does come off as a giant bitch, that is true, but when you are through watching the series I think it becomes clear that she never actually means any harm

reply

She's kind of dense and bossy but that's really fun to watch!

reply

I don't think you deserved to get flamed for that. I think she is quite deliberately portraid as a bitch.

I won't say anything to spoil it: just keep on watching.

Also I suggest you read the light novels. They have them up on the internet translated into english. When they all come out in english I think I will buy them.

reply

Watching them in the US-released order, I rented the first DVD, and was going, 'what is this?'

Seeing her slam Kyon's head into the desk, drag him around, molest and dress-up Mikuru against her will, blackmail the computer club, I was wondering just how this series was so popular.

Of course, I could have been like some and said I would not watch more after volume 1, but volume 1 left me with questions. volume 2 confused me as well, but began to crack through some of the questions.

I think by the time the show got to 'The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya,' that I slowly began to warm up to the show. When it started to delve into some more stand-alone episodes, then I began to see something in the series that I liked, with it's weird and strange vibe reminding me of a decade before when I was first taken in by the strange and weird world of the series 'Urusei Yatsura.'

Like what everyone said, Haruhi was portraited as a bitch at first but afterwards, she became nicer to everyone and... well charming.

I almost forgot why I liked this show so much, probably because of Kyon's remarks.

Another thing, don't you think this series is kinda ironic? Haruhi's the one who wants strange things to happen, but Kyon's the only one who gets them all. What's Kyon to haruhi?

By the way, I'm from Hong Kong. Seriously.

"Like what everyone said, Haruhi was portraited as a bitch at first but afterwards, she became nicer to everyone and... well charming."

I found some messageboard threads from some people who felt that Haruhi was changing and they wanted her to stay the same like in the first episodes. But really- you can't have a character stay the same. They have to grow and show us more of their personality.

"I almost forgot why I liked this show so much, probably because of Kyon's remarks."

I feel like Kyon sometimes. It seems that he kind of is a bit carefree, but he seems to sometimes mask it under a very serious demeanor. He keeps a very serious face, even though he secretly admires Mikuru (as seen when he claims to delete the pictures taken of her, and then puts them in a special folder on the Brigade's computer).

"What's Kyon to haruhi?"

That's what many people keep wondering about. He doesn't fit into her equation at all. He's ordinary, but I think maybe he's some form of a 'dampening effect' on her. He's kind of the person who kind of quells certain things about her. Whereas so much of the time Haruhi is like a live-wire, Kyon acts as the shut-off switch.

... All due to Haruhi's love for Kyon. She can end the universe and recreate it as she wishes but beneath all that power she is just a girl in love.

reply

OP, have you watched the entire series?!
At first, Haruhi is meant to be that way. She isn't likable and just seems self righteous and annoying. But as the series progresses, you understand her more and the reasons behind why she acts so brash. So she's not really a bitch, just on the surface...

<3Sairuh.

reply

Yes, she's a bitch, but it's because she's kind of disillusioned with life and depressed in a way.

reply

In the most recent episode, she actually drugged Mikuru's drink to make her tipsy and Kyon nearly punched her for it.

reply

The fact that she's brilliant at everything she does, beautiful, vivacious and very willful and potentially god means her behavior is allowed to 'slide'.

Very similar to real girls, even more so in japan.

That's the way I read her character. I read her character as a representative of every young adolescents girls reality changing powers only times 5. It's only natural that she would be bossy, a little cruel and manipulative.

Western audiences natural response is "just slap the biatch!", but of course in the japan this is unthinkable. So perhaps in this regard her being untouchable and 'god' is due to this Japanese sensibility. That Japanese young men are some of the most pussy whipped men on earth.

reply

No, she nearly got punched by Kyon. Too bad, right?

reply

Exactly too bad. I was worried that Nagato was going to grab his arm though.

We should learn from our past mistakes, so that we can make new ones.

reply

Not every complicated and slightly difficult girl is a bitch. Haruhi certainly has issues, but she can be extremely sweet and charming too.

reply

I found Haruhi to be (potentially) the most unlikeable character in any form of TV show or film ever. So much so that I stopped watching the series. I can handle shows with main characters being unlikeable, but to have literally the entire story and all the characters be based around one of the worst female characters ever just killed the entire show for me. I watched up til the baseball episode before I decided I'd had enough. I found Haruhi to be a bratty, obnoxious, selfish, manipulative bitch who couldn't give a fvck about anyone else but herself. These traits wouldn't be so bad on a character that is supposed to be disliked, but everyone on the series physically has to do whatever she says or wants all the time or else the world goes to crap, but they don't seem to mind or call her out on her sh/t attitude and disgusting behaviour nearly as often as they should. I'd potentially keep watching if someone, anyone, would just sock the bitch in the jaw, just once. I kinda feel like Haruhi is only liked by fans cos she's a pretty highschool girl who seems to be good at everything.
