Does the main character get any less irritating?

After 3 episodes, I am intrigued by the anime, but I don't know how much more I can take of the main girl character. Does she get any less obnoxious and preachy? The way the writers are very obviously sympathizing with her worst characteristics leaves me wary of continuing. So far, this show is only appealing to one side of the moral spectrum.

I know what you mean, I've also watched 3 episodes so far and I absolutely HATE her and it's obvious the writers takes her side. Like that burial thing, I think what she did was absolutely sickening. I just want her to be fired or anything that makes her disappear from this anime series. I don't think I'll be able to watch this anime if she continues to be like this.

Just to update my thoughts as I did end up finishing the anime, I will answer my own question. That episode with the space burial was the worst and that was actually the episode that made me go and make the orignal post because like you, I found it a bit disgusting. However, it does get better as it continues in multiple respects.

As more characters are fleshed out, you will probably find more to like. Hachimaki becomes the yang to Tanabe's yin, and there's a fair amount of development for the other characters as well. Tanabe herself, while still personally unappealing, does get better. The writers clearly have more idealistic and liberal sympathies and this was probably my biggest complaint about the show, but they're gentle about their views so that it's never too bothersome, even if you disagree.

Overall, I would still recommend this series even if you find some things unappealing. That is one of its strengths I think. It paints realistic portrayals of various different people with different personalities and those portrayals don't fall prey to the one-note cliche's that most animes fall to. Real people can't be morally quantified on a single linear scale. Real people are messy. Analyze anyone and you'll probably find at least a few things you don't like about him or her. Later episodes get pretty deep into the psychology of certain characters and this is where the anime shines in my opinion.

I would rate this show in the upper echelon of anime for sure. It is indeed worth watching all the way through. I do wish they took some dark ideas further, but I won't fault it for being uplifting.

Agreed. Though for me the must-stop-watching-this-crap barrier was a bit further with the first lunar visit episode, right at the moment when Tanabe starts feeling jealous of Hachimaki and that lunarian girl.

Though the show did drag on a bit much in the shippings department for me, I liked the rest and was satisfied with the final result. Though at the start I was expecting the final episodes to be more centered around Hachi's dream of having his own spaceship but this way was more realistic as opposed to a bigger scale development in such a small time frame.

It's still one of that 7 star indefenition to vote for, to me. I get it how people see this as great anime but I think my let downs were with some characters and plot ties disapointments.

The Past is an illusion. It is indeterminate and probabilistic.

Well to get back to you years later with an update. She grew on me while I started hating the main guy more and more. He was selfish and cold hearted. Why would she ever agree to marry him when he goes to a 7 year long space mission right after their marriage? Obviously he didn't love her that much since he just left her like that. How anyone can expect someone to wait 7 years is something I don't understand. If I was her I'd tell him to find me in 7 years and if I still was single I'd consider it.

Imagine how long ago this was written and it even wasn't past one year. Multiply this for 7-and-a-bunch and you can imagine how she felt.

I'm not planning on rewatching this so soon though.

Well it was past one year for me, but yes I know what 7 years feels like. It's not something I'd be willing to wait for ANYONE. If I had a wife and she said she had to leve me for 7 years because of her job then I'd consider that a divorce.
