wonderful

As a great fan of sci-fi literature (Asimov and Clarke my favourites), I loved this anime. It's unbelievabling realistic and sometimes the characterization of some characters it's surplising deep. The average quality is huge, the mecha design is as detailed as plausible, the ost is suggestive too.

That's a real shi-fi anime serie, much better than many other famous crap ones. A must-have.

I agree. This is a truly wonderous series, probably my second favorite television series ever (behind Red Dwarf).

Not a fan of Asimov, but a HUGE fan of Clarke, I'm dying to watch this series. I've heard nothing but good things about it. And it doesn't look too stereotypical which appeals to me.

I just spent money on a boxset called Otogi Zoshi but the first 3 dvds of that seemed kinda boring so I'm gonna sell that and probably buy this cos I've seen the first ep and it was nice, light hearted but serious and overall entertaining. So Yeh i'll buy it probably.

Light hearted, but serious? Just wait till you get in the double digit episodes. This IS the best anime and sci-fi series I have ever seen! The music, the writing, the voice acting (both Japanese and American), the story, the science fiction, the character development, every single element in this series is top notch!!! If you haven't checked this out yet, I highly recommend that you do.

I agree....it takes a while 'til it really gets going but when it does, you'll be hooked for sure. I can't remember the last time I was moved this much by an anime series.

I wish this message board would be more active as well.

Does there exist any other (anime) show like this one? With similar science (fiction) oriented theme?

The first two Patlabor movies, especially the second one, are pretty damn good and aside from Planetes easily the best hard sci-fi have seen so far. There is also a Patlabor series, but that can be quite goofy and isn't nearly as good as the movies. The Patlabor movies are completly self standing and not directly based on the series.

Then there is Rocket Girls/Roketto gâruzu, which is quite good on the science, but pretty goofy on everything else, which is to be expected if you shoot little girls into space I guess.

Anime aside, I can recommend Moon (2009), Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets (2004), Contact (1997), The Abyss (1989) and 2001 and 2010.

I really loved this anime.

I actually liked listening to the Japanese actors with the English subtitles, instead of the English dubs; I think the Japanese voice-actors were just much better actors than the English voice-actors. Too bad they couldn't use some talented American actors to do the English dub; this series deserves it.

Great anime.

Wonderful movies. Not just anime but very good shifi-crime-action thrillers. They're Oshii creations after all...

Seven years since the original topic was started ... Just enough time for von Braun to return from their mission.

A little sad that this brilliant series doesn't have more activity in the board.

I'll second that thought. I just watched it, and at the end I felt like applauding. Now I have to watch it again in the original Japanese with subtitles, to get the insights that the English translations always miss, no matter how good they are.
