Gravity?

Was "Gravity" openly inspired by this? The similarities are obvious.

I have no idea but all I could think of when I was in the cinema watching Gravity was "they could so pull off a live-action adaption of Planetes".
But they probably shouldn't because it's likely they'll mess it up!
But yeah I had Planetes on the mind all throughout watching Gravity :)

In a way I agree with you, but then again I kind of wish they did do a cinema adaptation because I believe more people would then be able to appreciate the sheer brilliance of Planetes! :)

I don't know but right after watching the movie I went to the Planetes page, because I was convinced that they were linked, like you said there are a ton of similarities. Obviously there are also a lot of plots they couldn't fit in from a series to a movie.

Then again to me Planetes was as the title suggests "wanderers", people finding their meaning of life in space. That is the same in Gravity but with a less hi-tech more survival story, if you exclude all the hidden meanings.

No but they were both inspired by the nightmare scenario that NASA scientist came up with from Collisions of orbital debris. They even have an interview with scientist that came up with this theory on the Planetes DVD. This is an example of someone seeing to things that are similar but they aren't similar enough to say planetes inspired gravity. But Kessler came up with this in 70's. I do like Gravity and Planetes though. I was more surprised that Planetes was as good as it was because I didn't think they could make cleaning up space junk that interesting over an anime season.
