*spoilers* about the terrorist plot

Planetes was made back in 2004, only 2-3 years into the aftermath of 9/11, so the writers simply had to include a whole terrorist sub-plot (or main plot, depending on how you look at it) in this sci-fi character drama.

I found it very surprising that the show presents the dark-skinned 'terrorists' fighting for a universally righteous cause (world poverty, inequality between first- and third-world people). What surprised me even more was that these people who we are traditionally introduced to as 'villains' in the world of today's mass media entertainment, ACTUALLY WIN IN THE END even if it's not extensively 'advertised' in the final episodes. They are pictured as tragic heroes after all, who achieved their just cause at the cost of several innocent lives, and of their personal lives and psyches turning into shambles.

PS. Another analogy can be drawn between the averted destruction of the moon base and the death of its 120,000 inhabitants, with the Hiroshima/Nagasaki tragedies which actually did happen.
