Does anyone feel the dub was miscast?

I think most of the voices are fine. I don't mind Haruhi's, but I feel Vic was NOT meant for this role. I like Vic. I think he's a good VA, I just don't think he has a very bishounnen or believable voice for that role. I think he forced his voice a bit too much for the "suave" voice that Tamaki has. I dunno. Does anyone have the same problem?

The Japanese version DEFINITELY does not have this problem, IMO. It was greatly cast and I loved how they managed to get Maaya Sakamoto to play a boy-ish voice but sound feminine when they needed it.

I know what you mean about Vic. He doesn't have that narural regal quality to his voice that Mamoru Miyano brings to the Japanese version. I don't watch the dub, but having seen several clips, I thought that it was pretty apparent.

I also disliked Haruhi's dub voice... it's too strange and husky unlike Sakamoto, who manages to sound incredibly feminine at the same time.

But like I said I don't watch the dub, so as long as those who do, enjoy it, then it's all fine by me :)

This is one of the few anime where I saw the sub first. I friggin love Mamoru Miyano and you know I think Vic did just fine. Overall I think the dub was nicely done Funimation screwed up the begining and ending theme but its all good just skip it.

I agree on Vic. He acted the part well, but if your voice doesn't fit- it just doesn't. He forced the smooth, yet regal charm far too much. It wouldn't have been that difficult if his voice had been right for the part.
Haruhi's really grew on me. It was different from Sakamoto's but I liked it nonetheless.

Everyone is but a homo side character in my romantic comedy!

I agree I also felt this way about greg ayers on kaoru but it kinda grew on me. vic's still hasnt.

At least the English twins could pull off sounding extremely close together when they talked at the same time, so that only those who had sharp ears could tell who was who.

Before I learned that Tamaki's Seiyuu was the same Seiyuu as Light Yagami, I thought that Brad Swaile could probably have pulled off Tamaki, but Brad isn't really suited for the kind of humourous acting required for this series. I agree that Vic does seem to try too hard, but it does make the many in-jokes referring to FullMetal Alchemist a lot funnier. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, I'm referring especially to a ball one of the twins (I think) picks up and pokes fun at. The ball looks almost identical to Edward Elric's transmutations of objects with faces, including an antennae. Studio BONES is the animation company responsible for both FullMetal Alchemist and Ouran. It probably should be thrown onto the Trivia page, but I'm too lazy to bother with the form.

Plus, there's that chemistry between Vic and Caitlin because of FMA, so that could be the reason they cast him.

Aaaaaaaaaactually Brad had done a bit role in InuYasha that was quite funny (Episode 8, The Toad Who Would Be Prince). He was Amari Nobunaga, the man that Kagome simply adored until she realized he wasn't the right Nobunaga from the legends she had heard growing up.

Vic is def NOT tamaki sempai. They should have someone with a smooth pimp voice ala John Burgmeier (kurama from yuyu hakusho) or similar.

I dont like the english much. Vic Mignogna is not Paige's Tama-chan. J. Michael Tatum is not my Kyouya and Greg Ayres is not Jami's Kaoru.

reply

I can't stand Kyouya's voice in the dub - he sounds like my dad! Contrastingly, I love Kaoru's voice - I think it's nice and boyish. It's Hikaru's I can't stand. It makes me cringe when he shouts. As for Vic I'm fine when he's being flamboyant, but when he's talking to a girl or being serious it just doesn't fit.

I'm one of the few OHCHC fans who prefers the dub, but I guess that's because I'm not cut out to be an anime fan. I just don't like reading subtitles so I've only seen a few episodes in Japanese. *slaps self on wrist* Bad fan, I know.

that would of been a good choice too but I still like Vic.

I'd probably feel differently if I'd seen the original first, but I love Vic as Tamaki. He's hilarious.

"Did Steve tell you that, perchance?"

reply

I thought the same thing without even having watched the Japanese version. I'm gonna finish it in English though - I'm still finding it all quite hilarious!
