Can someone please explain the twins to me...

I love the twins. Next to Tamaki they're probably my favorite characters.

That being said, their backstory episode "The Door the Twins Opened" confuses me on some level...

They want people to be able to tell them apart, but not be able to tell them apart? What does that mean?

From what I gathered of this episode, the twins became "warped" jerks because of their maid basically telling them that no one would ever be able to tell them apart.

Because of this, they pulled away from everyone and stayed in their own world... out of fear of being rejected and continually misunderstood.

So, they really want people to know them on a personal level and as individuals, but are too afraid so they act like jerks... or, maybe they want people to know them as individuals but to also be okay with their closeness to each other.

That's the way I understood it, but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm missing a deeper meaning...

I think they wanted recognition as individuals, and wanted people to tell them apart on their own initiative without the twins indicating honestly which one is which. Having said that, I think they are so comfortable with each other and rely on each other for 24/7 companionship, they have difficulty letting other relationships in, where one twin may have a stronger relationship / bond to that particular person than the other. It's kind of like the exclusive club of the twins, and a third party has to be proven worthy that they can enter this club. IN this case, Haruhi broke that barrier.
