Ending? Spoilers

From the very beginning of this film, I was hooked. The cinematography and music were beautifully paired and most intriguing. For the first half, it was on its way to being a great one. But then they just couldn't figure out what to do. Much like the boy,the director started out confident, focussed, self- knowing,"on top of his game" as we say. But then uncertainty set in and everything started to flounder, for the boy and the film.Sigh.

How did you interpret the end? He was such a pure hearted fellow, a real Almodovar protagonist. I hated it that he felt he had no options, because it didn't make sense character-wise.I didn't buy it. All he really wanted was love, and he finally had it. She was his.So the self-defeat resulting from the mother-encounter, the fire, and the end,i don't buy it. Call me a realist or call me a romantic, but I have recreated the end for myself and it is not the film's end.Cue Almodovar, cue love, cue hope.Somehow it will work out.

I will now go research the director. I hope this was an early venture for her/him; I'd like to see them get better and better. Lots of talent there.

I didn't understand the scene with Ana. It seems there are three possibilities:

1 - It wasn't his mother
2 - It was his mother, but she didn't recognize him
3 - His mother recognized him but didn't want to have anything to do with him

If it turned out not to be his mother, that would be extremely disappointing, but not a total defeat. He would just have to start looking for her again. But if it was two or God forbid, three, then I can see why he would be devastated and would completely unwind as he does through the rest of the movie.

I thought it was an extremely good film. I just wish I understood the Ana scene better.

...Or maybe Ana was never his mother in the first place, just a thief who took advantage of a street urchin?

slip, she was definitely his mother.i also couldn't tell if she saw him or not; but his seeing her in that position/state was what had him give up hope. i still didn't buy that, however.

I'm surprised there are no much comment as the movie was very good , the ending was very emotional as he left the girl but why ? he could stop stealing and be with her !
