So the dad just waits in the parking lot?

After his teenage daughter has been institutionalized for 10 months, he just waits outside in the parking lot instead of coming in to meet her, help her with her things (only one duffel bag?), or sign her out since she's a minor??

So, you think that adding a bunch of dramaturgically and economically uselless scenes to portray real life bureacracy, would make the movie better?

For the sake of argument, I doubt a set of 'dramaturgical' scenes would have cost any more than the 'unreal' scenes as-shot, and it would, as happyphantom9 said, have made sense. It would also have made sense to have Anna re-institutionalised the split second it was obvious she wasn't exactly 'cured' and before her psychosis could redevelop. Just saying...

...it's just another dumb film, get over it.

I thought the same thing. I think most parents would go in the building and get their kid.

The father probably came in, signed her out, and informed the staff to send her out to the walkway where he'd be waiting in the car. Remember, Anna was inadvertently responsible for the deaths of both her mother and sister. Her father had to deal with the shock & grief of this great tragedy/loss too. Cut him some slack.
