You know what I hate about movies like this?

I hate that people will not like the movie because they don't find the actress (or actor) to be attractive enough for the role.

Rating someone's looks is subjective to begin with. Even during the movie they show how it is subjective (Stainer's ex being a 10?)

Then people will go off how Alice Eve isn't a 10.

Put 100 people in a room, give them a list of 20 actresses who are generally considered attractive, and I doubt you'll have more than a few identical lists. You could raise the number of people to 1,000 and lower the list of actresses to 10 and you probably wouldn't have a significant amount more of identical lists.

And, you'd probably be shocked at the number of attractive actresses who are rated very low. It is just a matter of individual tastes.

I can certainly understand being critical of the movie because of the actress's looks if the actress was Rosie O'Donnell or Phyllis Dyller (yes, I expect someone to comment on how they think those two women are really hot). But, otherwise being critical of the movie for that reason is like being critical of Avatar because they were trying to get 'unobtainium' and that doesn't exist. Or being critical of Star Wars because true light sabers don't exist.

Like it or don't like it for the right reason(s).

And.....off soapbox!

I'm not a fan of this movie, but this analysis is spot on. Differing perceptions of attraction are part of the point.

One correction is that unobtainium isn't a term Avatar came up with. It just can sound silly especially for those who have not heard of it before they saw Avatar (which I imagine is probably most). Otherwise I agree with what the point of your post is. In any case the actress did a dine job in the part and the film even hits us over the head with the fact that tastes vary and that the problem was a self esteem issue, not a looks issue.

I first heard unobtanium mentioned in The Core - anyone know of any other references to it ?
