What would have saved this game? (spoilers)

ok, just finished it, massively disappointed, but more frustrated because it could have been a lot better with just a few changes.

my person issues

The Length- yeah the usual, its seriously short. But more than that, the episodic format just clearly didnt work. instead of 7 or whatever, they should have done 3 much longer ones, and gone into more detail. The plane crash and finding your backpack is not enough story for an episode of Lost!

Game Mechanics- trading thing was an utter waste of time, mainly because the game was so short it didnt allow you to customize your inventory. most of the game i was just carrying around fruit simply cos there was no other use for the inventory. combat was silly, most of the dialogue was pointless drivel, and aside from the annoying circuit things, there was no actual intelligent gameplay required.

Passage of time- kind of related to the length.... from memory this game roughly runs over seasons 1 to 3.... for a game that can be finished in under 3 hours?! it seems crazy for them to attempt to cover so much in so little time. it needed to be for focused.... set over a few days.

Useless people- for a start.... theres supposed to be like 40 people on that beach. not 4. and the ones they do have are just button candy.... wow, i can talk to sun.... she did nothing. why was jin just crouching in the jungle? they were there just to make an appearance. i know the show doesnt show 40+ people....but you cant walk around in the show! those people have to be there.

Dodgy damn main character!- Seriously, i dont like myself at all in this game. he screws everyone over! he's a scumbag who betrays everyone just so he can get off the island. honestly, i was hoping he died in the explosion. he deserves it. the story needed some serious work so i actually liked this character and didnt feel like i was an errand boy.

The Island- far cry and crysis prove you can do a huge island that actually feels huge. would it really have been so hard to create the entire damn island as one map? really? GTA can do an entire state, surely a few square miles of identical jungle would be doable. add a realistic night and day cycle, give the main character needs such as shelter, warmth food and stuff, and it would naturally replicate a desire to stay near camp. the black smoke should have been a rare thing, not there every time you leave camp.... they leave camp a lot in the show, and we havent seen the black smoke in aaaaaaaages!

the best way to have done this game would have been in a similar fashion to Enter the matrix.... have a story that is its own creature, that occasionally crosses the main plot, and eventually blends in. like a few other survivors on the other side of the island having their own issues, or just a few of the main camp people, or even someone from the boat! base these characters on real actors that are added to the show a few months after release of the game. that would have been awesome! even if they got killed off.

overall it feels like fanfiction rather than an actual lost plot line. it fills the universe with holes and leaves you feeling cheated.

anyone else got any ideas?

I agree with you totally!

I thought however they were on the right track but got lazy along the way. I felt the episodic layout of the game was brilliant, where you have flashbacks of whats happened. It really nailed the feel of the show. It again comes back to length, maybe 15 levels would have saved it length wise, and made it feel like a series, instead of placing them so far apart make it about the first series.. Unless you followed the show closely, you would NOT have a chance at knowing what was going on.

Characters facial features bugged me, they looked like emotionless puppets.

Voice acting also. If you can't get the real actor then don't bother. Or at least get people who sound the same. John Locke sounded like he was a native american. And charlie sounded like he was from the Beatles.

More challenging gameplay. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying a game that takes 4 hours to complete all the way through isn't really fun.

I really hated what they did to Jack's character too.. They turned him into a hateable person..

Rant over lol..

What would've saved it is if the game writers were told more about the story of the show. I know they tried to keep things under wraps, but really, when you're licensing out your material at least throw them a bone.

The head writer of the game is a teacher of mine at film school, really great guy, but he told our class when he talked about this game that he really had very little idea what the show was about at the time because it was only midway through the series. Nowadays you could get away with a full game, but as it stands, Via Domus had too narrow of a focus and your space was too limited. By the 6th season people were walking around the island wherever the hell they wanted.
