Some parts in 1992, some in 2007? WHAT?

Okay, somebody here posted the following--

"That part of the movie took place in 2007, as did Uma Thurman's. Other clues: the not so huge cell phone Diana's older lover was talking on in his truck across from the movie theater, the computers in the classroom after the shooting, and the two girls' moms having a common boyfriend Raul who "looks like Moby", when no one had heard of Moby in 1992."

What does that mean? How could the shooting scene have taken place in 2007?

Based on the mention of Moby and the prescence of cell phones, I was thinking Diana was a teenager in 2007 and the adult Diana's scenes are set in the future, 2022. Isn't that
a reasonable explanation?

Yup that is, but why is everybody saying it's set in 1992?!

Everybody's saying that because their assumption is somewhat flawed. They seem to assume that adult Diana is flashing back from 2007 to 1992 (when the shooting occured). That's not how I see it. As I see it, teenageer Diana is flashing FORWARD from 2007 (when the shooting occured) to 2022. Flashbacks are simply more commonly employed than flashforwards when movies are concerned.

Well, I would say not really flashing forward to 2022. Not really flashing forward to anywhere - just imagining her older self and the setting is still kinda 2007. Like since you don't really know what the differences will be in, say, fashion and tech and things like that - your mind would just use the current basic setting.

This would help explain why there doesn't seem to be much difference in the real 2007 world and the imagined "older Diana" world.

The clothes really confused me because they weren't old fashioned in the flashbacks - It was only when I got to the end I relised why .
