Did Phil Collins really perform like that?

The concert where Phil comes out during In the Air Tonight and walks slowly onto and around that stage before doing his drum performance.

Was that really his style?

It may very well have been. On that first tour, he had others playing the intro instruments, and he didn't really have anything to do but sing the lyrics. In this video he sits on an amp and sings until it's time for the drums to kick in.

At subsequent concert shows, he'd sing the song at a piano, and there'd be no drums.

Oh my gosh (that first video posted)! That is the performance they used for the game! It is amazing! They probably added the walking around the stage in the game to add more action and content.

I usually prefer studio recordings over live performances, because live performances are almost never same thing. And not to mention, the issue of lip-synching. Even some of my favorite bands from the `70's and `80's are guilty of it. But this live performance is so much better than the studio recording, that I would prefer to hear it on the radio instead.

Thank you for posting that video. Hopefully, I won't bite my words and find out that he lip-synched at that concert. If he did, it's hard to tell.

I saw a recent video of him doing In The Air Tonight and he walked up and down stairs around the stage until it was time for the drums to come in
