This movie fails because I don't hate Saul...

It's like the film wants me to hate him for everything he's done so that he deserves what he gets, but honestly I felt more sorry for the guy than anything...I mean how can someone have SO MUCH bad luck in one fricken day??? I don't think he deserved the death penalty either, I mean the whole thing was an accident...

it just didn't work for me, I was more mad at the mother in the end than I was at him...

Are you serious, an accident? He accidently killed two people. If someone's behavior causes another to die, whether it is indirectly or not, it is the same as if he shot the kid himself. Having a super bad day is not a excuse to kill people (even if the guy is cute).

This movie succeeds because you don't hate Saul...

this movie is amazing. i felt sorry for saul and sorry for the mother and her child. i know what saul did was completely wrong but everything that he went through still got me to sympathize for him.

I agree with ljmm, I think the point of the movie is that you don't. You come to terms with both sides. From what I've learned, that's part of the point of restorative justice. It's not about hate, it's about moving on and coming to terms with what is and moving forward.

Ljim and DePere have got it. Saul is not a one-note bad guy. There are layers and depths and they all come through in every word and gesture.

One of the achievements of Renner's performance is that in the end the audience knows Saul very well. And he silently makes it clear Saul comes to know himself just as well with no excuses or self-pity. The only redemption he will ever have.
