Frontier(s) vs. Eden lake vs. Inside vs. Martyrs

Its simple, this is a fatal 4 way showdown between 4 modern horror movies that a lot of people keep talking about and are saying good things about them, so which one of these four would you add to your collection?

reply

Martyrs, no contest.

reply

I've only seen Eden Lake. It was very depressing. i had to watch a few older romantic screwball comedies to make me feel better. I'm too much of a wuss and have not been desensitized, so the other three may be out for me.

reply

well, Eden Lake was very depressing, but I did like it. The end just really gets to you.
Martyrs is so interesting to me because the beginning seems to go one way and the last laugh seems to go in this direction that you want it to stop and it seems to get worse until the very end. And you wonder what will become of these people. If you are on to use the term "torture porn" then the last half is that mostly.

Something that felt similar to me in disturbing way is the films "The girl next door" and "anti-christ". Those are quite graphic and terrifying, especially to women.
And then the film "Dead Girl" might be a good film for those who find themselves laughing at how horrifying and perverse something is. It's a twist on the zombie genre that makes you think that maybe zombies have rights and feelings too.

If you are Anti-American: Admit you are doing it just to be cool. Does it feel good to hate?

reply

I have seen THE GIRL NEXT DOOR it was one really hard hitting film about what people can be capable of, haven't seen ANTI-CHRIST or DEAD GIRL yet but I'll check them out if I can find them.

reply

All movies except for Frontiers, which was trite crap and I made me fastforward at times out of sheer boredom.

Anti-christ is Lars-van-trite epidemic crap. I mean this movie is so bad, it wouldn't even pass for a student's project. It had like a total of 15 minutes I deemed watchable.

The girl next door, is not your typical horror-movie. For me it unknowingly was the ultimate horror experience:
All horror movies basically have one or several sidelines (e.g. them vs. the protagnoists), or vice versa. The line totally blurs in TGND as the psyche of the protagonists is dismantled in a group-dynamic interaction and you are left as an observer of a mild take of historic events.

TGND is the only great movie ever which I regret watching.

After I watched Martyrs I had to watch a fun 60's Elvis movie to lift my mood so I know how you feel.

reply

Martyrs
Inside
Frontiers
Eden Lake
in that order

REC was also an amazing one, probably better than Martyrs...but not by much lol.

some fans act like a pack of mad dogs when they dislike an opinion. it's kinda sad.

reply

Has to be 100 percent MARTYRS - the only modern horror - if that is actually the right term - torture-porn film that made my bile rise.....

If you only watch MARTYRS once then revel in how the beauty comes leaping off the screen at the end - an absolute masterpiece!

reply

Cool, MARTYRS gets two positive votes and EDEN LAKE one negative, chances are good that I might just get MARTYRS as another addition to my forieghn film collection along with either INSIDE or EDEN LAKE, (I already have FRONTIER(S)) so obviously I can't go wrong with MARTYRS, then what about the other two?

reply

If it is that foreign horror films are that which are appealing, I can recommend SHUTTER. Not the US remake from the last couple of years but the Korean original, by Parkboom and Panjong - that film scared the bejesus out of me the first time I watched it!!!

As for INSIDE and EDEN LAKE - haven't got around to watching them yet but will say that Eden Lake looks a taut thriller more than anything......from the trailers I have seen.....

Hope this is some use to you, jhpstrydom!!!!

reply

Thanks for the recommendation, I watched SHUTTER with my friends a while ago (the Korean original of course) and one of my friends said after the film was over, he would go in the guiness book of record as the person that changed his underwear the most in a short amount of time because SHUTTER was that scary.

From one foreighn film fan to another, here's a recommendation of my own, its also an asian film its called RE CYCLE, if you liked the SILENT HILL 4 game check out that film if you haven't already.

Thanks again Gandhi2.

reply

Hi jhpstrydom

Thanks for the recommendation - have now got that one on my list - RE CYCLE!!

One that I haven't managed to track down is RING:THE VIRUS, the Korean remake of RINGU 2(?). By all accounts it is better than the Japanese sequel and more true to the original novel. I keep searching for it but all I find are dodgy Knock Off Nigel copies!!

Have you seen PHONE?? That one has as many creepy moments about it as SHUTTER. Again Japanese - if memory serves me correctly - and the lead actress changes her mobile but still gets creepy calls from this non-existant number. There is a little girl in it as well who starts reacting wildly after picking up a call and they have to travel to an old abandoned hospital - again it is a while since I saw it and my copy has been doing the rounds at work!!!

Anyhow, I ramble - now I have two films that I want to see, RE CYCLE and INSIDE!!!

Many Thanks!

reply

Shutter is Thai. Phone is Korean.

reply

Apologies BlazingPurpleStars - my memory fades the older I get!!!

PHONE is indeed Korean and SHUTTER is Thai.

As I stated in my post above, my memory skates away with the facts....

reply

"Martyrs" easy. In fact what surprises me more than anything is how much I think about the last5 minutes. It's basically 2 films in one, and not for the lighthearted & if not for all of the gore, could possibly thought of as a thinking persons movie. A completely unexpected weird film but is quite interesting in the reasons behind the torture of thee individuals.

reply

Precisely - most people will not endure all that comes before the last ten minutes or so. When the reasoning - as deluded as it may be - for the insistent torture and force-feeding, the decimation if you will of the human spirit, that brings the imprisoned to that point, becomes apparent - at that moment you are as numb as the victim, the core of your very being drained.......then that wide-eyed, pacified expression crosses her face. And you know, you just know, that she has become so much more, more than a victim, more free than her captors ever thought she would be.

Of course sometimes in seeking an answer, you discover a truth you did not search for.....

Even writing this it has sent a chill through me and brought a tear to my eye.

How this film can move people after repulsing them, to twist it unlike any other film, qualifies MARTYRS as a cinematic gem.

reply

Martyrs does it for me. I loved it. Eden lake was good also but Martyrs beats all those 4 movies.

reply

Inside is my favorite out of those. Then Martyrs. Then Frontiere(s). Haven't seen Eden Lake yet, but it's next on my list.

reply

i loved Frontiers and Eden Lake(though I hate those little batsards)

Inside was cool, but matryrs SUCKED at the end.

Hey dont forget The Cabin...that was another awesome one from this decade

reply

inside is a good film but you really shouldn't try and explain the plot to anyone who isn't a big horror fan as it will make them think you are slightly twisted! and eden lake is a totally depressing thriller which appears to be a taut thriller but the ending just makes your stomach drop. it's so feasibly real it made me want to cry! there are similarities between eden lake and 'them' if you've seen that. we're leaving the brutal torture area of horror now though. sorry.

isn't this music dreamy........

reply

INSIDE is the best violent gore filled film

reply

Totally Agree with you because INSIDE is the film that give you nightmares and tension may cause many phobias... i have never seen a violent movie with a great great 70min story...

reply

I just watched Frontier(s) last night, haven't seen Eden Lake yet, so out of the three of Frontier(s), Inside, and Martyrs, my vote goes to Martyrs as well. Inside and Frontier(s) packed a more visceral punch with the gore, but Martyrs was just off the charts as far as being both a visually brutal -beautifully filmed though, if that makes sense- and psychological mind-f##k of a film.

You tore off one of my chests!

reply

I found the most haunting part of MARTYRS to be the beatific expression on her face. It is almost like an inner peacefulness manifests, becoming tangent, and justs settles on her.....

reply

Martyrs definitely. Then comes Frontiers and Eden Lake.

Eden Lake #1 for me, than Martyrs than Inside than Frontier(s)

They wanted too GET AWAY from it all, instead they found EDEN LAKE

reply

I've seen them all and think they're all great films. Martyrs is the best by a long shot.

You might also want to consider Mum & Dad (UK). Deserves a place on that list easily.

reply

its a very, very hard decision. I love them all! They are all in my fav films list. But i think i will go with Inside.
Inside-10/10
Eden Lake-10/10
Martyrs-9 or 9.5/10
Frontiers-8/10(a very high 8)

WHATS IN FU CKING INSIDE ME!!!!!

reply

Nice to see another person who LOVED Eden Lake like me, kuddos EmmanKiddo, BTW: also nice to see somebody who appriciates P2!!!!!!

They wanted too GET AWAY from it all, instead they found EDEN LAKE

reply

Eden Lake and Inside are both great, but Martyrs is greater, more original, surprising and thought-provoking.

Frontier(s) isn't on the same level with these three. Some nice suspense, but basically derivative and sort of silly, blatantly ripping off other movies left and right, from Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Descent. Also: Nazis, really?

Martyrs was relentlessly savage, yet hauntingly beautiful.

Yeah, I vote for Martyrs.

reply

All very good movies.
Eden Lake tho because my name is the same name is the main villian Brett and hes small and cruel like me.

I HATE CHUUU

reply

Haven't seen Eden Lake so of the three, Martyrs. It was way, way heavier than Inside and Frontiere(s).

reply

1st Inside (this is my new favorite movie)
2nd Eden Lake
3rd Martyrs
4th Frontiers

reply

Holy s hit ! after just seeing this movie I can honestly say that all of them are really f ucked up LOL !. But, that's what I effing love about these foreign horror films is that that don't hold back. I really appreaciaate what the French, British and Italien filmakers are trying to give us because there also hardcore horror fans who just wan't do give us fans what we wan't and that's something violent, gory, intellegent and orginal which are the blantant missing qualities of almost every horror movie that comes out of Hollywood's arse here. It's sad really :(. As which of these four are the best I would say what the hell check'em all out, but for me Eden Lake and Inside stand out the most. Martyr's was good, but not really what I was expecting and as for Frontiers I may not have liked it that much, but it's still watachable.

Peace Out !

reply

I appreacite and love all these films equally they all bring something to the table..

i know it's old but i still think switchblade romance is still a top film

These Days

reply

Ok, if I count the votes it looks like MARTYRS wins first place, followed by EDEN LAKE & INSIDE who both have a tigh for second place and FRONTIER(S) gets last place, so for those that don't know which one to choose out of these four, your answer is right here.

reply

I own and have seen all (according to the four movies in question) except Eden Lake, which I intend to check out soon. Inside sealed it's place as my all time favorite film. The film NEVER lets up once it starts, visceral in ways I never seen.
I have seen Froniere(s) second and thoroughly enjoyed the film. Not too long ago I picked up Martyrs. God, never have I enjoyed a beginning to a film SO MUCH. That was a movie within itself. The second half was great in it's own way. The beginning will always be my favorite opener, and Lucie one of my favorite complicated protagonists.
I would have voted Inside first, followed by Martyrs then Frontiere(s). That is, without having seen Eden Lake. Amazing films all around.

reply

Martyrs is in a completely different league than those other films. If I had to rate them, Eden lake would come in a very distant second, followed by Inside and finally, Frontier(s). Eden Lake and Inside are both fine films but Frontier(s) is just another horror film. Nothing special going on there at all.

reply

For me - I haven't seen Inside, but don't worry, I have it, just need to sit down for it ;) - I would have a hard time putting them in order.

Martyrs wasn't as gruesome as I thought it would be from the reviews I saw.

Frontière(s) was the goriest in my opinion, though they did shy away a bit in some of the scenes.

Lake Eden is a very good horror/thriller but I wouldn't even compare it to the other two. It's very tame in the gore department. It seems to get it's rating from the fact that teens do the violence.
I would replace Eden Lake with something like High Tension in a comparison like this.

reply

For me Inside takes it but Eden Lake is right behind. Martyrs was good but I felt as though the writer had come up with two stories and decided to mash them together.

you bow to me now you blow me.

reply

I've watched all four in the last week, I'm on a bit of a foreign horror kick right now (especially french and spanish). It would be really hard for me to pick them or place them in order. Each is unique. I would place the plot of Frontiers last, however there are a few scenes in Frontiers that stood out as total horror that won't be easily forgotten. I'd say the film with the most tension of those four, for me anyway, was Inside. From beginning to end, it is one big ball of stress.

I've also seen a few Spanish films in the past few weeks I might recommend: [REC] and Them. Each of those could be classified with these.

reply

hey keep a lookout for [REC 2] coming out soon

you bow to me now you blow me.

reply

"hey keep a lookout for [REC 2] coming out soon"

I wish I could see it in the theater... I live in the chicagoland area, so it might be possible if I keep an eye out. However, just to be safe, I'm going to go to Netflix right now and save it for the queue when it's released.

reply

Well I know that this is a stretch but it will be screening at midnight madness here in toronto as part of the toronto international film festival.

and its screening in a brand new theater I am pretty excited.

you bow to me now you blow me.

reply

1) INSIDE
2) MARTYRS
3) EDEN LAKE
4) FRONTIERS

I own all 4. 'Inside' is definitely my favorite of the 4. And 'Frontiers' is definitely my least favorite of the 4 (though I still enjoyed Frontiers). Martyrs and Eden Lake are pretty damn close to each other and are probably interchangeable. But I'd say I enjoyed 'Martyrs' slightly more.

Although my favorite French horror movie of all time is 'High Tension' (Haute Tension).

The scariest movie I have ever seen is 'REC' which is from Spain.

reply

"The scariest movie I have ever seen is 'REC' which is from Spain."

I saw The Exorcist when I was young, and I still think that might be the scariest movie I've ever seen. I will agree that [REC] was a giant of a horror film, and that Manuela Velasco was not only the most beautiful actress I've seen in all of these films, but fantastic in her portrayal of Ángela Vidal.

(slight spoilers follow)

And for me, if it wasn't the scariest, it was certainly the most tense. In the end, I actually jumped off my couch during the search of the attic, and got up off that couch and moved really close to the TV to get a glimpse of the figure in the final few moments. I can't say any of the other films we mentioned have done that to me.

Totally intense horror ride, certainly worthy to be categorized in the class of the rest of these films.

reply

LOL THEM? Really? I know it's all matters of perference and opinion, but I hated THEM. I bought it thinking it was going to be some kind of 'monsters or aliens movie', or just a great slasher. Was SO into the movie, then they revealed the antagonists and.. fell flat with me.

I know it is supposedly based on rerality, but their attackers really killed the movie to me completely. ESPECIALLY the ending, given she had such an advantage. I never will get the wasted suspense back. But as I said, preferences and opinions.

reply

Almost *everything* these days is "based on reality," right? ;)

I thought it was intense like [REC] from start to finish. Had two believable characters who loved each other and had to figure out how to get themselves out of such a mess, much like Eden Lake, come to think of it. Not your typical horror film, which would usually have the girl that cheats and gets slashed, etc., the people that disappear one by one etc...

Yeah, I thought it was well built and very creepy, especially the noises the stalkers made in the house and in the woods. And when she was looking through the peep hole there was a jump-moment there that definitely got me.

reply

And I found a new love interest in Olivia Bonamy. ;) It's always easier to root for the victim to get away when she's downright lovely.

reply

The movie [Rec] has been mentioned over and over again in this thread, is it that much better than the American remake? It's not hard to imagine that it's better, but it would have to be leaps and bounds better to even approach good. Thanks in advance for your input.

reply

After reading the threads at the [REC] boards, I decided seeing Quarantine wasn't worth it.

reply

Quarantine was good enough, in a shot-for-shot remake kind of way.....but [REC] was outstanding - way better then the American remake. It presented the tension within the apartment block in a more nerve-jangling way......sent shivers down my spine at the end, when they discover - well, I won't spoil it.....

reply

[deleted]

Quarantine was better than Rec. It's in vogue to bash American movies and favor foreign, but I've obviously seen both and thought Rec was trying too hard, the female was pretentious, and it wasn't nearly as scary. By all means see both.

I tried to contain myself but I escaped.

reply

Yes, [REC] was really THAT much better than Quarantine.
