Why did he have to kill the old lady ???

She had already told the stupid girlfriend that her fiance looked like the guy on America's Most Wanted. Was he just angry and risked a murder, practically on his doorstep, drawing cops into his neighbourhood, for no real gain ???

The reason he killed her is because his fiance told him about how she liked to spread rumors. Whether or not she believed the neighbor, somebody else in the neighborhood might.

I still think it was an extreme reaction though because if the old woman was going to tell anyone, she already would have and it seems she had a reputation for gossip anyway...but yeah, your reasoning must be what the makers had in mind, so it does makes sense in that context. Thanks muchly !!

Why would he kill people in genral? Hes a crazy *beep* If he could control his rage he wouldn't be on his 3rd or 4th family.

Wouldn't be much a thriller if he went around giving flowers and candy to people who didn't like him in a effort to become friends.

I'm pretty sure he only killed people if it helped him in his quest to find the perfect family. Therefore, killing the old lady must have helped him in some manner, it's not just killing because he can't control his rage.

Anyway, watching this version encouraged me to find and rewatch the original and that was a treat.

Its not like the police suspected it was murder anyhow. They all thought she just fell down the steps. Accidents happen all the time. Especially with older people, they tend to fall quite easily. So it would be feasible to assume that no one would think she was murdered when the body was found

How are you not seeing this? The old lasty recognized him, was known as a gossip hound, and began telling people.....hello?

Hello ?? I did see it...I know why he killed her...my question is about if he HAD to kill her or not. Hello ?? Hello ?? The murder was not necessary...she had already told people and wasn't believed. Killing her didn't UN-tell it. Risking getting caught for murder because he resembles a police sketch ?? Hello ??

Condescending much ??

Do you not comprehend that his cover was blown and he had to do what he could to save it?

Do you not comprehend that she had already tried to blow his cover but wasn't believed ?? So, he risked killing her for no reason. If she had threatened to tell his wife her suspicions then sure, kill her...but she had FAILED to blow his cover so no...he did not HAVE to kill her.

In fact, killing her is what lead to his slip up (about how she died) that made the son suspect him.

And what, you think this women - whose convinced he's a serial killer and is a gossip hound - is going to suddenly drop it? "I tried. Oh well."

Plus, if I'm remembering correctly she old told Sela Ward's character.

In fact, killing her is what lead to his slip up (about how she died) that made the son suspect him.

You're not connecting the dots here. David didn't suspect him because the old woman died. If the old woman had simply turned up dead, there's no issue. David suspected him because the old woman accused him of being a serial killer AND THEN she died.

No...David suspected him because he said the old woman broke her neck...and the postman hadn't said anything about HOW she died when he told the Stepfather...David had heard the entire conversation.

So you mean to tell me had she simply broken her neck and DMichael never heard the part about the old woman suspecting David, he would still think David did it? Come on.

What ?? No.

The postman told the Stepfather that the old lady had died...he didn't say HOW she died. The son overheard this conversation.

The Stepfather came in and said to his wife that the old lady had broken her neck. The son overheard this conversation too.

So the son knew that the Stepfather had killed her or else how would he have known how she died ??

Nobody had taken any notice of the old woman's "gossip".

It was only after realising that the Stepfather knew too much about the old woman's death, the son went and looked at the AMW website...which the Stepfather had already searched as it came up in autofill when he googled it, which ADDED to his suspicion.

Your turn...

Because she had seen his story on America's Most Wanted, and loved to gossip. True, his fiance (Sela Ward's character) may have not believed it, but somebody in the neighborhood probably would, given the chatterbox she was. Thus, she was a loose end that needed to be tied up. Couldn't afford the risk. And Michael got suspicious, because he overheard the entire conversation from his window (beginning to end), between Grady/David and the mailman. The mailman said simply that the old woman had had an accident and died. That was it. He didn't go into detail. When Grady/David came back inside, he said the old woman had fallen down the stairs and broken her neck. Michael heard this conversation as well. The mailman never told him that. Only that she had died of an accident. If Grady/David were innocent of this, he couldn't have known those details. He would have just repeated what the mailman had said, that the neighbor had had an accident and died, instead of those specific details.
