In mythology I've always been told and read that Athena is a virgin goddess. So wouldn't the fact that Annabeth is Athena's daughter be impossible since Athena is celibate? I'm not trying to be picky but it's just something I've picked up on.
Annabeth is a brain child. She's conceived through the thoughts and love of Athena and her mortal father. It's like magic, baby Annabeth is brought to her father's house one day. You should read the books.
OH MY GOD, that was exactly what wad going through my mind, sundaefries, when I read the poster's comment. People shouldn't try to be right until they know they are.
Since you have read this signature, it means I have held your attention for this entire message.
In Greek Mythology, Athena sprung from Zeus' cracked head in full battle armor. So it would make total sense if her children were born in a similar way (i.e. brain child).
Athena was not born of thought. Not at all. Zeus worried that a son would overthrow him if Metis had a son so he tricked her (long story) and swallowed her. Metis sat in his head banging away on armor. The pain became too much for Zeus and Hephaestus opened up his skull and Athena, fully grown and armored, sprang out. Yes - she came out of his skull but is not born of thought...her mother was INSIDE Zeus' head.
Don't worry rebel...the movie is utter *beep* and the books are slaughtering greek mythology heavily - from that perspective the books are just lesser *beep* too. Annabeth - yeah what a greek name haha. (Although I liked the books - I can blend out the mythology part)
How are the books slaughtering Greek mythology? The first book had stuff certain elements from the Perseus myth, book 2 had the Odyssey and Jason and the Argonauts, book 3 was Hercules, book 4 Theseus and the Labyrinth, and book 5 was the Titan War.

Well, they are completely changing stories and the "summer-camp" for demi-gods was just the lamest and most idiotic thing I've ever seen!
The most annoying thing in Greek mythology movies is that movie-makers and even authors just DON'T GET IT that Hades was never evil! He is NOT the same as the christian devil, his realm is NOT hell! ffs Neither were the Titans and their leader Kronos [father of Zeus] evil!
Movies fault. In the book he doesn't want a war because the dead are already causing to much traffic problems in the Underworld. Well what else do you expect half-bloods to do? Just live in the mortal world without any protection. If Chiron was able to teach heroes in the stories, wouldn't he need somewhere to train them without getting attacked.

You should read the books. Hades isnt evil. In fact, the books makes a huge point in pointing out how misunderstood hades and his children are, but thanks for proving the point.
granted this movie completely changed the story and omitted the fact that there was a bigger darker power at work.
"She sprung from the head of Zeus in full battle armor or something."
"Exactly. She wasn't born in the normal way. She was literally born from thoughts. Her children are born the same way. When Athena falls in love with a mortal man, it's purely intellectual, the way she loved Odysseus in the old stories. It's a meeting of the minds. She would tell you that's the purest kind of love."
"So your dad and Athena...so you weren't..."
"I was a brain child,...Literally. Children of Athena are sprung from the divine thoughts of our mother and the mortal ingenuity of our father. We are supposed to be a gift, a blessing from Athena to the men she favors."
Thank you, when my nephew asked about Athena's daughter I came here looking for answers, none of the other gibberish I've seen from others here made sense. Having not read the books I failed to understand how Athena had a daughter, especially since all mythological references make it clear that Athena is denied the right of motherhood.
I can now tell my nephew the story, and maybe entice him the give up the Ranger's Apprentice books for a while, so he can read the Percy Jackson ones :)
When my nephew asked about Athena's daughter and I told him it wasn't possible, I too wondered about the answer.
Much of Athena's history (e.g. parentage, siblings, 3rd born) is disputable, but one fact remains the same regardless of which people tell the story; Athena was denied Motherhood, she could not have offspring by any method.
I've not read the books though, in who's pages the answer apparently resides.
Just had to reread the books again because we were going to use them in a class. The books make it clear that with demigods, all that matters is your earthly parent, although it's considered bad form to hook up with someone in your own cabin, that is, with the same godly parent as you.
