American take on Harry Potter?

I see there's a second part coming out soon, so I was considering watching the first one, but it seems that everyone hated it. I take it this is like an American version of Harry Potter?

I think Sea of Monsters will be much more faithful to the book than this film was.

While it is true that both series are about boys who find out they are extraordinary and have special abilities and go to another place to hone skills and have two close friends, one of which is girl, that's it. The differences are bigger.

Harry Potter lost both parents at the same time. Both parents were human and both could work magic. Harry was raised by his mothers sister and her husband and they hated Harry. Up until the last book, all of Harries adventures take place inside the walls or grounds of Hogwarts school. The last book is the only adventure Harry has that involves travel of any length that is consistent.

Persy Jackson's mom is a human who can see extra things in the world. His dad was a Greek god, Poisiden. In the first book Percy's mom is taken to the underworld, but she is not killed, and she does survive and we see her for a bit in the other books of the series. Percy Jackson's first friend was Grover, who turns out to be half animal, half goat. The only magic power Percy has any control of is making water do whatever he wants it do, talking to horses and sea creatures, navigation, and his ability to fight. Instead of a magic wand, Percy uses a ball point pen that with a click becomes s sword that kills monsters. In all the books, the adventures take place outside the walls of camp. Oh also, Percy has some contact with his dad when he knows who and what he is, but the contact is limited and brief.

Anyway, I could go on but you get the idea. Both stories seem similar, but they really are not. The books are much better then the movies no matter what the series is.

It's a lame, immature rip-off of Potter with bits of Tolkien pickpocketed on the side.

Harry Plopper was already influenced too much by American hacks.

Its no surprise that it wants the Harry Potter dollar.

Its that man again!!

"American"? Not really. Made in Canada, and most of the actors are Canadian or British.

Didn't the author pitch it as "Harry Potter with Greek mythology" ?

reply

Thus is like Harry Potter, but it's a good film in it's own right.
