David Milch's FU to HBO
I'm convinced that JFC is Milch flipping the bird to HBO for canceling Deadwood prematurely. What other explanation could there be for a writer this talented handing in work this lame?

shareDunno about you but I was most disappointed by how he mostly wasted such a great cast. Can't say I hated JFC but it was definitely pretty disappointing when you look at how great it could have been.
shareI have no idea what the show was about, so I don't know how great it could have been. Truthfully, I don't think the show was about anything other than Milch's revenge on HBO.
shareYou can't be serious. Truthfully. And since you're so perceptive and all, what was Milch's frame of mind about "Luck," which was the next series he did for HBO, done long after JFC?

"Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana."

Anyway, some people see something they don't understand and they are intrigued and think maybe it's an opportunity to learn something new, or explore a different paradigm of thought. Whether or not it turns out to be valuable, the process of learning it changes the student. Other people see something they don't understand and they get angry and smash it with a hammer. Then they display the rubble and pound their chests and feel better about themselves.
It's at least worth noting and being amused by the fact that people don't understand JFC so they call it heresy and want to nail it to a proverbial cross.
Actually it was more like HBO throwing him a bone. Deadwood was expensive and the cost was drowning HBO at a time when they were trying to get 'slim'. In other words, if Deadwood had Rome ratings or Game of Thrones ratings it never would have been cancelled.
Just imagine the pitch meeting for JFC. I'm sure it ended something like, "Yeah, ok, whatever. As long as it's cheap you can do whatever you want."

Deadwood was cancelled due to runaway production costs. As a showrunner Milch was responsible for keeping the costs under control.
As to JFC, Milch was known for and has admitted his struggle with alcohol and drugs. Post DM's entry into AA he began writing JFC, which not only turned off DW fans but lagged in generating a new audience.
