Charlotte pissed me off...

How could she just run off like that?
Not trust her own mother.
Just because she couldnt be with a boy she loved.
Gosh!

Before too long you'll be a memory.

reply

I know. It's stupid Girls/Women like her that gets others who are trying to live a new, normal life into trouble. Really, really dumb. Besides, I doubt that the relationship would last very long, anyway.

Another thing, although this movie is fictional, it reminds me of that Texas polygamous cult that happened in real life.

she was just boy crazy.. i cant believe she did that either.. i was mad at the fact that she was gonna go off and do what she wanted..she wasnt all that pretty
Whats your damage heather?-veronica sawyer

reply

Oh she was a stupid wench. I mean, really? She thought after all she saw that she would be allowed to marry that dumb boy Jamie? She was so lucky her mom went after her.

reply

I saw this movie today and I felt the same way!
How selfish!

Just because she didn't get HER way, she was going to mess it up for her whole family!
And remember, when her mother said "they were gonna take your sister...she's barely twelve", all Charlotte could say was "why couldn't they let ME be married? I'm 16!" ...never mind the danger to her sister!

SELFISH!

reply

Oh I had forgotten about that, Amanda. She totally dismissed what was going on with her sister and as always, focused on what she was going through. Man, now I wish that her mom and left her. I mean, she decided she wanted to go back with her stepfather, didn't she? Let her rot!

reply

Charlotte made me mad too. If I was in her situation, I would LOVE my mom 10X more for leaving her life to protect me and letting me have the freedom to start a new life.

reply

She made me mad throughout the whole movie. It would have served her right to marry her step-father, too bad her mom got there on time to stop it. Throughout the whole movie all she thought of was herself and getting back to Jamie. Forget that her sister Alice was almost raped ande her step-father treated her mother like crap. It was all about Charlotte and her wants and needs, spoiled brat!

reply

She is a teenager, we all were once, I called my teenhood 'when I was young and stupid'.

reply

Out of everything that Charlotte did, I thought the most surprising one was the fact that Judith had warned Charlotte that Jo. or Jo. was lying to her and that he wouldn't let Jamie and Charlotte wed. I'm sure she was very much aware that Jo. didn't treat Judith right.

reply

I know, I could not stand her! I wish her mother had not gotten there in time to save her. Maybe then she would have really learned a lesson.

reply

I wished the same thing but at the same time, no woman or child should be in that kind of world. Charlotte was dumb to think that she could be with Jamie in that kind of world, the writers came up with a lame ass climatic idea like this one. The girl goes back to be with a boy she liked, to marry him, I was like "hello!!!! Polygamy compound! No one marries for love there and there isn't any fidelity there", I think it would have been better if it just ended with Judith trying to save her sister and her children or if her husband challenged to take her kids away.

reply

Actually, the wives have to be faithful to the husbands. But the men get to have all the wives they want.

reply

Hence why I said "no fidelity" and if every woman there was a wife to some guy then whore is just a metaphor.

reply

The mother had no choice.

Things were already going wrong for her eldest son, who was getting bullied about his family life, and all that useless Principal had to offer was some totally irrelevant advice to tell her son that "violence is never the answer" completely ignoring the fact that he was the victim in all this, not the bully. For a moment, I even wondered whether the Prophet might have had that Principal "on the payroll" but concluded that one needn't go to such lengths to account for an insensitive bonehead.

Given such insensitive treatment, how long would it have been before the boy, too, started running away to join his big sister back in Harmony? Not long, I suspect, had things gone smoothly for Charlotte.

Even as it was, the outcome was almost entirely fortuitous. Had the Prophet not insisted on "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory" by making her go ahead with the marriage to her stepfather, he would not only have retained Charlotte, but within a few years, at most, have got back the oldest boy, and possibly, over time, the other children as well.

Essentially, Judith's only hope was that the Prophet would be too stupid to realise that he'd as good as won. In the movie, he was, but I get the impression that in real life his kind are often wilier than that.

reply

Alice seemed very happy with her new life. Given the fact that she was almost raped in Harmony, I don't see her wanting to go back.

The youngest two would grow up knowing a normal life. The boy was about five and the girl probably three or four, since they were both in preschool. Growing up knowing nothing but a normal life, why would they choose to go back?

The oldest boy would probably adjust eventually. Especially if he ad a decent strong male figure to replace his "father".

I thought it was wrong of the mother to jeopardize the freedom and well-being of all of them over the snotty, selfish behavior of one person. Who didn't even care if her little sister was raped.

reply

Not sure what you mean by "adjust". The older boy, as I recall it was not at fault in any way, he was the victim of the bullying. How do you "adjust" to that?

And of course a "decent, strong male figure" cannot be produced to order. And even if he is, that doesn't mean he and his stepson will hit it off. Such relationships are notorious for going sour.

You might be right about the two youngest, but if both their older siblings end up back with Dad, it is by no means guaranteed.

reply

Ok, I will define it for you. Obviously, none of them were used to the normal life. it was going to take time for all of the to adjust in their own ways. (Remember, I think it was Alice didn't want to remove her undergarments? I really think that eventually, she did).

As for the male figure - where did I say he would be "made to order"? or that she had to remarry? That person could be a coach, a teacher he hits it off with, even that cop who seemed to take an interest in the family.

Again - why would Alice want to go back to the place where she was almost raped once, and was going to be forced into a marriage, probably with a 40+ something year old man? She seemed to be really enjoying her new life, and the chance to get a real education.

reply

I couldn't stand her either. It definitely would have served her right if she had been forced to marry her stepfather. Her mom could have been a bitch and left her there to teach her a lesson lol. Also her mom did the right thing keeping the kids away from that crazy man. Imagine forcing a innocent 12 year old little girl to marry a man in his late 30's or early 40's. All these fake phrophets will face god one day and will be punished for their sins.

reply

It's really sick. A 17-year-old and and 18-year-old who want to marry can't. But that girl who "just turned 14" had to marry that man who was probably in his fifties. And 12-year-old Alice would be "assigned" to a man probably in his forties, at least.

Did you notice when Josiah was kicking people out - the second man didn't even seem to be married yet? The first one run out was told "his wives were no longer his, his children, priesthood, etc) But the second one was only told his priesthood was no longer his. How old do men have to be to marry?
