Alyx's Reaction to the Stalkers

Is it just me, or did it seem strange that Alyx seemed so traumatised by seeing the Stalkers in the train, and then when one was crushing her, she really freaked out.

I wonder if someone she knows was turned into one. I thought it might have been her mother, but it says of Wikipedia that her mother died at Black Mesa...

reply

Did you ever think that she may care for human beings in general, and not just specific people?

reply

Im not saying she shouldnt be upset for the plight of total strangers, cause yeah, it is sad what the combine did to them, even if we dont know who they were.

I just thought it was interesting the way she seemed a lot more than upset. Terrified would be the word id use.

I always thought it dealt with her being one of the characters thats been on sleep deprevation, fighting off this hostile alien race for days. Now if you were her, and had been doing all of this, and then all the sudden you get a stalker on top of you, is it so hard to believe that you would just emotionally break down, just like she did? It was essentially the straw that broke the camel's back.

reply

If I was her, id have broken down a lot earlier.

Throughout Half Life 2 and Episode 1, shes always been shown as being calm and collected, and very strong emotionally. She'd had to deal with Xen creatures and the Combine for 10 years prior to Gordons return. Thats obviously made her a very strong person.

But then the stalker incident seems to really hit a soft spot. It totally overwhelms her, to the point shes cowering in a corner, curled up in the fetal position.

Theres probably nothing more to it than it was a spooky scene and she freaked accordingly. I just wondered about it is all..

reply

I thought that scene was excellent... The stalkers' screaching was wicked and I liked the way they kind of opened up her character a little bit more... I'd love to see Barney cowering in the corner in the fetal position over a headcrab or something...

Hahahaha that would be a funny as hell especially since Barney can't stand Kleiner's Lamar. Anyone notice the reference to Blazing Saddles when Dr. Kleiner calls Lamar, Hedy? lol Another thing, whats his whole deal with that cat? I've played almost all the games (working my way through Episode One now) but I can't remember what Barney is talking about. Its been awhile though.

reply

There is no deal with a cat... I mean, there is in their universe, but SOMETHING happened with a cat to Barney a long time ago when Gordon was in stasis... It's really just an inside-joke kinda thing that you (the player) are apparently never supposed to know the punch-line for...

reply

hmmm....leaving us in the dark is a trend Valve is quite fond of....Idk it just made me curious because Alyx also seemed to be confused with Barney's paranoia of the cat and I would've left it alone but then about Halfway through the game (Episode One) Barney says something like, "Did you just hear a cat?" thats what got me thinking. anywhose you're probably right.

reply

haha, "Did you just hear a cat?!"

Kinda reminds me of the "Evil monkey in the closet" from family guy... No one knows the origin, or why it persists, but it's there, it's funny, and it's just...weird...

Irgendwie...

Guys . . . it's a reference to The Fly. In the original version, there is no babboon turned inside out. Instead, the scientist tries to teleport a cat, which never materializes on the other platform. As he contemplates what may have happened to it, an ethereal meow is heard.

In my opinion and from what I gather cat was probably a failed test experiment where Dr.Kleiner and Barney were testing early versions of their teleport. Chances are they used a cat to see if the teleport would work, which probably ended up with horrible results for Dr.Kleiner and Barney (not to mention the cat). That reminds me of that movie The Fly where Jeff Goldblum puts monkey (or pig? I can't remember) into an unfinished teleport which causes the animal to turn inside out. Creepy scene.

I thought he always just referd to lamar as a cat becuase cats are extinct and he just says that as some sort of escapeism. Like if some1 gets lost and they keep sayign what they will do when they get home.

I'm just the coolset dumb dude you'll ever meet *put on matrix sunnies*

"Hedy" was a reference to the Austrian/American actress and communications technology innovator. Hedy Lamar. The character in Blazing Saddles was called "Hedley", and was a direct play on the actress. Mel Brooks had a great line when Hedley got angry at him for confusing his name with hers. "What are you so indignant about? This is 1873! You can sue HER!"

reply

...ok

It's actually explained in the commentary.

maybe alyx feel sorry for the stalker.

normal human turns into stalker

isn't that makes her sad? he had feelings you know.

maybe stalker don't have feelings(curse you breen!)

reply

I think under all the circumstances I wouldnt blame her for her reaction.

reply

Yes but she also reacts to those two running the computers. She certainly seems more afraid or sorry for the stalkers than the equally (ex)human zombies.

I think it's important to note how rarely they're seen. There's two in the in the core, two in the security room with a rollermine, maybe a dozen or so on Gordan's monorail ride and likewise on the train. But the only ones you directly fight are the two in the core, a fight in which Alyx isn't involved.

Personally I agree with the OP, backstories are a foot right there.

reply

Well, consider that Stalkers are really the only humans (aside from the troops) that the Combine altered to such a degree. I mean, they are hideous abominations and lack any humanity they once had while still retaining a human body. Not to mention I personally think they are were the freakiest things in Half-Life 2. >_>

reply

What bothered me most about this scene was that there was no way to comfort her. After seeing the stalkers (a direct casualty of combine oppression), she absolutely breaks down for a moment - an understandable consequence. Yet I (as Gordon Freeman) can't do *beep* to interact with her - at best I paw at the Use key in the hopes of simulating interaction, but there's no effect. Eventually, Alyx stands up and suggest that the both of you presson, but I could never shake that feeling of unease as my interactivity with the game environment failed.

reply

Yeah as soon as the train broke and the screaming started I was up and about trying to find Alyx (as she was screaming her arse off too), after scrambling over to her I tried to pull it off her.
Afterwards I tried using the 'use' action aswell, it really seemed as if she was traumatised which is a really good kind of attachment the game tries to make between you and the character, I felt kind ofbad though because I dropped the Stalker on her after I'd picked it up the first time.

I watched the stalker trying to maul her face for like a full minute before pulling the pod off of her lol.

The posts about the cat were a long time ago, but...

When we meet Dr. Kleiner face-to-face for the very first time in his lab they have a conversation about the teleporter. Barney asks about the teleporter working, for real this time, and then says he still has nightmares about "that cat." Alyx then asks repeatedly, "what cat?", and pointedly gets no response from Dr. Kleiner or from Barney. Later in the game if you listen closely you can hear a mewing sound and then Barney says, "Did you hear a meow just now? Damn thing haunts me."

I wanted to comfort Alyx too. Curse you in your muteness, Gordon Freeman!!

reply

I was thinking maybe some other trauma happened to Alyx... Maybe she was assaulted or such in a close confined space. Maybe that's why she freaked out.
