What punishment for O'Grady is just?

This question left me confused after the documentary. O'Grady was sentenced to 14 years and served 7 years. I presume that 7 years in a federal prison for pedophilia was no walk in the park. Then the USA deported him to Ireland, where he roams free.

Does he deserve further punishment? What would that punishment entail? Hasn't he paid for his crimes, heinous as they were?

I have no answers.

reply

He should have got life. In Ireland he very well may be doing the same thing.

I've been contemplating this. While I don't believe in inhumane harsh sentences I also believe that society should be protected from people like O'Grady.

When it comes to pedophilia, several studies have shown that it is a condition that is very hard to 'cure'. In most it is pretty much incurable. At best you will have an ex-convict who has 'learned his lesson' and will repress and ignore his urges. However there is always a risk he will give in to those urges at one point. He might not, but are we willing to take that chance?

I would say someone like O'Grady would deserve at least 10-15 years for the crimes he was convicted of. But taking into account that he has admitted to molesting at least 23 more children he sounds like someone that can't be cured and can't be trusted around children. I would say castration, preferably surgical would have to be a requirement for freedom. Either that, or he remains in some kind of facility for the rest of his life.

yeah you can't really 'cure' sexual attraction. they are attracted to who they are attracted to. unfortunately what they are attracted to is children and children are definitely not ready to engage in sexual activity.

so basically what they need is to not act on their desires. but that is so hard as they will be tempted and want to do things like every other sexual being does.

the only solution i would say would be to somehow turn off their sexual desire. and i don't think that is possible to do. i don't even know if that's 'humane' really, i mean what they are doing to kids is inhumane, but i guess they are people too.

turn them into non sexual people. i can kinda see why some entered the priesthood just by thinking of this option. a good excuse to 'never get married'. because they probably are as disgusted with sleeping with adults as we are with sleeping with children.

putting them in jail does nothing to 'cure' them but keeps them away from their targets, counselling may help with their ability to stop themselves. but you still have a load of creepy people ogling children and it's just uncomfortable to even think of. i would like to see them take a medication or be injected with something to take away their sexual desire so they are essentially asexual.

as for the question, for someone who is already guilty of acting out on their desires. definitely take them out of society. forever.

Well, there's always chemical castration, which means they take GnRH-analogues, which decreases testosteron levels and thereby also the sexual desire.
However it's no guarantee that they won't continue molesting children, especially since we can't be sure they will take their medication as they should.

Castration with a rusty butter knife.

If castration was only the answer life would be easier. Chemical or physical castration does not solve this issue by a long shot as these urges are already wired in the perp's brain. A man does not need testosterone or an erection to violate someone. Sadly, and I feel sick writing these words, all he needs are his fingers, his mouth or objects.

No confusion here. The only sure way to stop him is to imprison him for the rest of his life or kill him. His total lack of remorse and failure to acknowledge anything remotely close the magnitude of his actions (and some other traits) indicate he is a sociopath to me. He will continue to harm kids until he can't. His past actions certainly warrant being locked up for the rest of his life.

A just punishment for O'Grady would be a shotgun blast to the groin, followed by the non-rendering of aid and, if he doesn't bleed to death, a shot to the face.

To my mind, anyone proven guilty of raping little children has forfeited his right to life.

I'm a proponent for this.
