Disgusting

This documentary was eye-opening. I was a non-believer before this movie, but this doc just reinforced that into steel-reinforced concrete.

7 years for destroying these lives, these families? And no one who covered for him was sent up the river as an example of what happens when you abuse the public trust to this degree?

The US government and the Roman-Catholic Church are guilty of gross corruption and obstruction to the point of allowing children to be abused and those who abuse them to get off with a slap on the wrist.

What I can't believe is that O'Grady behaves like he made a mistake like spilling milk. "Whoops!" He shows no remorse for having destroyed these lives.

I can't remember how many times I gasped in horror or cried during this documentary.

He should have been jailed for life!
Parents can be so blinded.....

Disgusting as hell but a great documentary.

I couldn't watch this to the end, there was just too much air time given to O'Grady, and he enjoyed talking about his 'tendencies' too much for my liking. He should have gone directly to jail and died there, the bastard! All the others who condoned his activities should be in jail if they're still alive!
I read an article about the same abuses happening in the Jehovah Witness church, it happens in all religions and cults and covered up, which compound the problem. Like a parent condoning the abuse and making the child interact with the abuser for years and years. Just absolutely criminal and sad.

I try to imagine a world where every child born will reach adulthood without abuse of any kind, what a pipe dream. Imagine the impact on the entire world, the drug industry, the porn industry, the mental health services ........... the list is endless.

Please ... PLEASE ... don't take what I'm about to say the wrong way. I am NOT ... and would NEVER ... excuse what this guy did. However there is an explanation; which is that paedophilia is a disease. One of the disgusting things about this film is that fact that he STILL, quite obviously, doesn't understand the damage he has done and I think that is a symptom of the disease. I'm not saying that he should be allowed to stay free; quite the contrary. I think he should be in a mental institution and should be getting help. Probably he should be castrated too. What I want to say - and I hope that after what I've written above you'll get where I'm coming from - is that the people in the Church who did nothing about it or, worse still, enabled it to keep happening by moving him around, are the ones who should be severely punished.

Does that make sense?

If a schizophrenic murders some people because a voice tells him to, then I don't think he should be executed, or thrown into prison for life. I think he should be given treatment and treated like a sick person; which is what he is. However if there were people - like police, or doctors, or attorneys, or judges, or parole board members, or whoever - who enabled him by letting him back onto the street, or by not doing something when they knew there was a danger, then they should be held accountable and be punished.

Do you see what I mean?

What's your thinking?

What you've said makes a lot sense. I agree, the enablers, the ones who turn a blind eye should be severely punished. Locking him up in a psych ward and being castrated is also a good idea.
O'Grady is beyond help though with regards to rehabilitation. Child molesters lack empathy and compassion, have a sense of entitlement, have no respect for boundaries and are exploitative. These are traits of a narcissist, and those with these traits will rarely seek help.
I believe it's a mental illness too but not to the degree that they don't know right from wrong. They're cunning predators who are delusional. They convince themselves children love them, while they see the child as an object, to use, abuse and discard.

Thank you for understanding where I am coming from. It's dangerous to express an opinion that can be mistaken for excusing what these horrible monsters do.

I completely agree with you; I think he's beyond help and, yes - you are so right - I think he did know that what he was doing was wrong. People who are genuinely insane - in the legal sense of the word, meaning that they don't know what they're doing is wrong - are very, VERY rare. When they commit crimes they basically do nothing to hide, or cover up, their involvement and, as a result, they are usually caught pretty quickly. Those are the people who should be helped and shouldn't be treated as criminals; which is not to lessen the horror of what they've done - in any way whatsoever - but to look at it as a tragedy all around. One of the issues with those people is that they can often be helped with medication and, as such, can get to the point where they can be considered for release back into the community. The problem with those people is that there's no way to ensure that they stay on the medication and, if they don't, they can revert to the mental state in which they might commit crimes again. It's a horrible scenario because you don't want to confine a sick person, one who wasn't responsible for their actions, for their entire lives, but if you let them go they might end up committing crimes again. What's needed is a failsafe way in which to ensure those people stay on their medication?

But I digress!

I think you're right that O'Grady, like a lot of paedophiles, did know that what he was doing was wrong; that's why he hid what he was doing. If he didn't know it was wrong then he would have been chatting up children and touching them in front of their parents and other adults? As you rightly point out though, being a narcissist he lessened his crimes in his own mind and convinced himself that the children loved him. Listening to him just makes me feel sick. The way he wants to write to them and invite them to meet him. Unbelievable! In his mind he imagines a meeting where he and the kids - now adults - get together and share old times. He apologises, they accept his apology - because, hey, it wasn't that bad and they actually enjoyed it - then they all have a nice cup of tea, tell jokes and have a laugh. I wanted to see one of the adults accept and then, upon meeting him, kick the living $hit out of him!

You know?
