Coming to US DVD Sept. 7 2010

I just found out that this is coming out on DVD (looks like no Blu-Ray) in the USA on September 7th. Here are the particulars courtesy of Amazon:

# Format: Color, DVD, NTSC, Subtitled, Widescreen
# Language: Italian
# Subtitles: English
# Region: Region 1 (U.S. and Canada only. Read more about DVD formats.)
# Number of discs: 1
# Rated: Unrated
# Studio: E1 Entertainment
# DVD Release Date: September 7, 2010
# Run Time: 211 minutes
# ASIN: B003RHZ68Y
# UPC: 741952681090

The curious spec here is the 211 minute run time. The previous, European DVD contained the edited 130 minute "cinema" version. And supposedly the original full-length version that ran on Italian television was 180 minutes (some sources say six hours or 360 minutes, but that seems rather improbable). Cramming 211 minutes onto a single DVD disc may result in the sacrifice of some quality, but if the math works out to 180 minutes of the original version plus a half-hour of bonus material, I'll take it.

I rented Caravaggio as it was just released on dvd (I'm in the US). It was very well done, and presented the life of Caravaggio from childhood on, but the main focus was his adulthood. So much history brought along also, and I like that! Caravaggio led quite a life, and seemed to be ill a lot -tb? or some other lingering health problem. Caravaggio is one of my favorite artists from that era, and the richness of the cinematography and acting was much more than I would have expected to see. I highly recomment it!

How long did it run?

It's quite long -perhaps 3 hours?

As a followup to my original post, I obtained the new Caravaggio DVD.

The Good:
It is indeed the original, full-length 180-minute version from Italian TV. So we get some important backinfo missing from the 130-minute cinema version (Caravaggio knowing the countess from his childhood, how he got his sword, etc.)

The Bad:
It's letterbox rather than anamorphic :-(.

you kidding?

you are complaining about something which Vittorio intends for you to see it.
always watch movies in letterbox ok.. widescreen captures everything the way the dop wanted you to see it..

so your bad thing.. is actually a great thing
