Is this movie underrated?

I'm just wondering because I want to see it but I don't know whether to or not because it doesn't seem that everybody likes it.
So is this movie underrated? Was there some smash-hit film out the same time this one was out and that film got all the money and attention (it was made 2008 so I'm guessing The Dark Knight maybe)

it was a fun stupid forgettable action film.

rent it, watch it, forget it.

life goes on.

fun though.

To answer the question...No, not underrated. Certainly one of Nicolas' worst; he was much better in "Matchstick Men". Sadly, I think Larry the Cable Guy could've played this role with similar success.
For this type of film, I'd recommend "Day of the Jackal" instead (not "The Jackal" with Richard Gere). But stick with "BangDangerousKok" if you really crave a film with more gunplay than plot, an unnecessary love interest, and an unfullfilling ending. And remarkable hair. Or, just surf the message thread here for Funny Porn Titles, for a good laugh.

I definitely think 5.4 stars is underrating--but one can't argue with composites of many viewers. Perhaps a star or two either way is based on people disappointed because they expected another kind of film, people rating a film they haven't seen because they hate the actor in general, people influenced by critics before seeing the movie, etc.

Personally, I gave this 7 stars. Possibly because the last film I rented just before it was Fracture, which was so rife with illogic, plot holes, irrelevancies and so on that it made Bangkok Dangerous look good by comparison (its stars are in the 7 range; go figure).

Anyway, the plot of this movie generally makes sense, most of the cliches were given enough of a tweak to make them watchable, the characters held me, the action was relatively well-staged (if one accepts the incompetance of bad guy minions, which isn't unique to this movie), and the setting has definitely not been overused in English-language movies.

I think it deserves more credit than it gets, sure. But then I love pretty much all films that don't have much dialogue in, so I'm pretty much guaranteed to say that whether the movie is actually good or not.

It should be a 6 i guess

I've given it a six, I like the Location,
it's not a classic, Nic cage just dials in his performance and it's cliche'd as heck,
but it's well shot and it's not a terrible film.
I throw away films I don't like (I buy cheap ex-rental dvd's)
I'm keeping this one, I like the first hour, I like the location and the visuals.
I recommend Bad Lieutenant: New Orleans, now that one IS a classic!

It is definitely underrated on IMDB (Current rating of 5.4)
I give it about a 7...

Off course it is underrated, because it is a crap. Last good film Cage did, was this Scorsese film, I don't remember the name but whatever...he's a history now. No more charisma, the same impressions and movements, boring.

History? The guy's still making tons of movies and all are enjoyable to watch. Maybe you should quit watching movies because you've become a spoiled brat who can no longer be pleased.

Maybe you should quit watching Cage movies. That way he might be more discerning in the projects he appears in, instead of cranking out "tons of movies", of which only a precious few are enjoyable to watch. Furthermore, a movie that is "enjoyable to watch" is not necessarily a good movie. Such is the case with Bangkok Dangerous and most of Cage's other films of this recent era, all of which have steadily reduced his box-office pull.

reply

I just don't understand how this is rated so low.
Watched it for the second time and my opinion still didn't change. This is a masterpiece for an action film.

Maybe it got the ratings it got because it *is* a very depressing film however. There is no redemption or 'good endings' in this one.

No, just plain bad.
