Carl stepping on the land mine...

(i only just started watching the season a few days ago, so please don't mention anything that happens during future episodes for me)

When carl had his foot on the landmine, why couldn't jack just hold down his boot while carl slips his foot out of the boot? Then carl could have found a big rock or something to put in or on the boot?

Good suggestion but they didn't have enough time, they knew Dubaku and his men were coming and didn't have time to look for a rock, plus there was no guarantee it would work and then it might have also killed Jack, then no one would have gotten the children to safety

I was thinking exactly the same thing. With Bauer digging around it and talking about disarming it, why not just do like you suggested. True, I know nothing about the technical points of mines, but they said five kilos would hold it, and it didn't go off even with all the digging or with Carl moving around when getting shot, so within the universe established, it surely would have been possible (and logical) to do that... if the scriptwriters hadn't fixated on good old self-sacrifice.
