Is this canon with the show?

You don't need to be familiar with the show before the movie. But the movie sets up seasons 7&8. It's actually a sort of jumping on point if you want to just get familiar with the back end of the show.

Yes it's canon.

And yes if you ever plan to watch more of the series, you really should start with season 1. This movie is fairly meaningless on its own and is really meant to catch you up on what happens between seasons 6 and 7 that make Jack return; because there is such a long time gap between those seasons and 6 left him out of the country with no interest in coming back.
