What's the difference between...

...the Witchblade Complete Collection and the Witchblade Boxset (Viridian Collection)? I'm about to send for it but don't know if one is better than the other. As far as I can tell they're exactly the same thing but distributed by diferent companies.

reply

They appear to be the same. I'd just grab the cheaper of the two :)

Definitely. I've never seen this before and am only getting it because of good word of mouth. I like anime and Witchblade so it shouldn't be that bad, right?

reply

After catching the first and second episodes on IFC, I started reading reviews for it. They all told me the same thing, and the same week I started watching it, I took the plunge and bought the Blu-Rays.

24 episodes later, I never regretted it ;)

For risk of gushing, I'll just say that it gets two very enthusiastic thumbs up from me ;) I absolutely loved it.

It should arrive in a week or two. I'll let you know what the final veredict is. If it turns out to be crap I'm holding you personally responsible...just kidding.

reply

I'd take that challenge :D

Really, I don't know how anyone can NOT enjoy it. It's got a moving story, excellent action, plenty of comic relief, and heck, enough fanservice for ten anime!

I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did :)

So far I've seen the first ten episodes. It's a bit slow in the action department. The monsters she fights with (I can't remember exactly what they're called) are kinda dumb looking and pose absolutely no threat to the Witchblade.

Each episode plays out more like a soap opera than an action adventure. And just like you said there's plenty of comic relief and a lot of fan service. Can't get around the whole Reiko (is that her name?) acting more mature than her mother. I mean, I know it's supposed to be funny, but how dumb can Melonie be?

Up till now it's been entertaining. It's just that sometimes the story feels like it's going nowhere. But even those episodes manage to be somewhat fun I guess so I shouldn't complain. I guess it's not what I was expecting from it, but it's not bad either. Let's see how the story unfolds...

Once you get to the half-way point (which it looks like you are nearing) things are going to take a turn. The emotions will flow harder, and the enemies are going to become a bit more of a problem.

Just wait ;)

In the words of River Tam, 'Things are going to get much, much worse'.

Serenity is awesome. They should continue Firefly as an anime series. Sigh... But back on topic, I finally finished the show. You're right, things do get better (or worse for the characters) as the story progresses. But you gotta agree with me that things are a little slow in the action department. The drama is quite good though.

Any other recommendations? Just got Witch Hunter Robin. Desert Punk seems to be funny and interesting as well.

reply

Don't get me started on Firefly/Serenity. I could rant and rave for days ;)

I enjoyed Witchblade because everything was balanced. What it lacked in action, it made up for with fanservice, and what it reduced itself to in fanservice, it MORE than makes up for in its story and characters.

Of course this is just my humble opinion. I adored the characters, and...well what can I say? I wept like a baby through the last 4 episodes. Literally, balled my freakin' eyes out. It might be light on action for a few episodes, but in terms of emotional involvement, I've yet to find something that matches Witchblade.

As for recommendations, 'Black Lagoon' is an amazing series. Enough action for ten anime, and enough profanities for many more. Awesome, awesome characters, and really great stories.

I've recently gotten into 'Berserk' and I've gotta say, I'm completely hooked. It's a VERY cool series, and being the fool I am, I've read ahead. Knowing what I know, knowing how things are going to turn out, I may retract that statement concerning the emotional involvement of Witchblade...

'Ghost in the Shell' might seem like an obvious recommendation, but hot damn is it too good to NOT mention. Anyway you get it, whether it be the original theatrical release, the TV series, or manga, 'Ghost in the Shell' is absolutely ridiculous.

Berserk has to be one of my all time favorites. There's still a whole bunch of Manga volumes that haven't been made into anime. I just wish someone would make a second season already. If you enjoyed Berserk as much as me you should give Gungrave a try as well. Both storylines are quite similar.

I've never gotten around to Ghost in the Shell. I might try that out soon. Black Lagoon seems interesting but a bit expensive...

reply

It seems that there is a massive following for Berserk, that I never knew existed :(

I only got into it recently, and I've got to say, knowing what I know, and only being on episode 17 of the anime; both my head and my heart feel like they're going to explode.

Now I hear there is a new anime project on the way, and I've begun purchasing the manga volumes. Keeping it low-key as to not spoil anything for anyone, I just hope that she is cured soon...

Gungrave, eh? I'll have to look into that...

Ghost in the Shell is absolutely worth your time, as is Black Lagoon. If Black Lagoon seems expensive, it is with good reason; it is AWESOME.

"Keeping it low-key as to not spoil anything for anyone, I just hope that "she" is cured soon..."

I think you read too far ahead. I don't remember anything about a certain "she" having to be cured. You're just going to have to spoil it for me. ;)

Okay, so I looked up Black Lagoon and, I gotta say, It's quite appealing to me. I think I'll try the first season (first 12 episodes) before I get the "Second Barrage". It'll be easier on my pocket that way, especially with the Holidays around the corner.

reply

Yeah, I spoiled myself through to where things currently are ;)

Even though you're asking for it, I'm still wrapping this in spoiler tags ;)

Basically, "she" refers to Casca. She is raped by Griffith, losing her and Guts' unborn child, and now is a broken shell that doesn't speak, and basically has the mind of a child.

Again, I'm not even up to that point in the anime yet, but I've got a friend who eats, sleeps, and lives Berserk, so I'm led to believe this is just about the gist of it.

Now, I'm to understand that there is hope for Casca to be cured of her condition, I just really freakin' hope I'm not being led astray by rampant rumors >:(

Black Lagoon is just...I can't say enough good things about it.

Revy, just Revy ;)

The first season is easily better than the 2nd, but make no mistake, the 2nd season is still WAY better than a LOT of other shows out there, it just comes up a little short in the second half. The first three eps of season 2 though, some of the most chilling moments I've ever seen, though I still have yet to actually watch that last episode of Berserk...

So how was the last episode of Berserk? Left you wanting more, right? I just figured that "she who will not be named" died after the last episode. I guess at this point it's pretty obvious who we're talking about.

So about Black Lagoon, I gotta ask, what's up with "Roberta's Blood Trial"? I keep reading that the first two OVA's were released but I can't find them anywhere. Season One is already on the way. Does it end with a cliffhanger?

reply

The last episode of Berserk actually brought me to physically vomit. It hit me really bad and I've been trying to bounce back for two days now. I'm getting better...

Casca does not die in the end. There are 22 volumes of manga AFTER where the anime leaves off and she is in them; there is much more in store for her and Guts ;)

'Roberta's Blood Trail' is the OVA third season of Black Lagoon. It's released in Japan, but not yet here. You can find it on a few fan-sub sites, but it can be tricky.

As for Season 1, it is entirely self-contained ;) Something tells me though, that once you watch Season 1, you're going to buy Season 2 pretty much immediately ;)

reply

Umm, I want to read those. Which volume picks up after the anime ends?

reply

Volume 13.

I own it, but have not read it yet, however, volume 13 contains the last bits of the last episode of the anime (Including Casca's rape which is substantially more graphic, and more disturbing in the manga)(Seriously, proceed at your own risk).

However, after reading the first three volumes, quite a lot happens differently in the manga. It's an unfortunate thing to suggest, but if may be in your best interests to start from 1.
