The ending to this series is so depressing...(SPOILER S)

Seriously, I was depressed for days after finishing it. I picked up the Final volume and the last 4 episodes just got sadder. I grew to care for each of the characters as the show went on, and the fact that Masane could never get the life that she wanted with Riko because of the Witchblade was flat out heartbreaking. There were parts where I nearly came close to tears (the scene where Masane struggles in vain to get the WB off of her and the scene where she tells Riko about her eventual death) Even though it was implied early that the Witchblade would eventually kill her, the ending still hit me like a freight train. I haven't felt this way about an anime show since the conclusion of Cowboy Bebop. Which is really surprising you'd never expect the show to have such an emotional core due to its fanservicy exterior.

I just finished watching it on IFC just over 30 minutes ago. I must say that I agree with everything you said. I am still shaken by that heartrending ending, I nearly came to tears. Funny thing is, I too compared it to the depressing feeling I got after I watched the Cowboy Bebop finale.

It seems stupid getting emotionally involved in a cartoon, but, it just has that effect. I have been watching it faithfully every week since it came out earlier this year. And even though I saw this coming, it still left me with my mouth gaping and my eyes wide open.

The only thing I didn't like, was that I expected there to be a tender moment between Masane and Tozwawa. I figured there wouldn't be, but, a guy can dream.
That was also another reason why the ending cut me really deep.

In the end, it was, and still is one of the best animes I've ever seen. Heck, it's one of the greatest shows I've ever seen period. But, that's just my opinion.

There was sort of a love triangle in the series. Masane, Tozawa and Takayama. I kind of liked that they took the less predictable path with Takayama, but in the end I felt bad for Tozawa. It was implied that he had feelings for her, even if he never admitted it. It felt like he was kinda left out afterwards, even though he tried to do one last good thing for her in the end.

Yeah, I would've preferred it if Masane and Tozawa had a little more something going on between them. I really don't like the way Masane and Takayama go together.

In the end, I guess it really doesn't matter.

I do have one question to ask you. I wrote on another thread, a situation that bothers me to this day.

You don't have to respond, you don't even have to read it. It probably is a stupid thing to worry about, but, the thought confounds me.

To answer your question, yes they did. It seems very implied. Even the dialogue seems to say so.

I think its interesting late in the series. I always get the feeling that there's a bit of tension between Tozawa and Takayama when they first meet. They get right to business about everything involving the Witchblade and I-Weapons, but I also felt a quiet jealousy from Tozawa. Their faces seem to say it all.

Damn. That's too bad.

Anyway, thanks for your insight, it's much appreciated.

somehow Cowboy Bebop's ending was not sad... i had a sort of satisfaction seeing Spike die, because he died like a real Hero not just the outlaw he preached to be, but dying that way and not changing his personality and his cool attitude make him more memorable than if he had continued living.

anywho, Witchblade's ending was kind of sad, but to be honest the part that really broke my heart was at her last meal... when she couldnt even taste the food she loved. Thats why women are amazing, they are so strong.

PS: Fullmetal Alchemist's ending is one of the saddest i have ever seen.

Personally, I didn't think Full Metal Alchemist ending was that sad. (If you include the movie.)

Ed and Al, despite being in another world did get to spend the rest of their lives together. I just wish they gave their friends back home a better sendoff. Especially Winry.

Even though they were building up to the expectation that the blade would eventually overpower and kill her, for some reason, I thought there might be a happy twist that allowed her to live or something wonderful like that. After all, there was that question in the beginning of the series of why the blade chose her...like why was she so special?? So, I thought it might reveal some unique character or spirit she had that would overcome the eventual demise of her. Even after that magnificent explosion on top of Tokyo Tower, I thought there might be something to wait for...but just the ending scene with Rihoko catching the seashell in her hands was the end of it..oh and her smiling. I wish there was a different ending.

You could see the ending of this series coming from about 6 episodes before the end and I knew anything deviating from that conclusion would be a total violation of the story they set up. That didn't stop me from being completely devistated as it happened and hoping desperately that something would change. I just finished the series and I'm still crying about it. That right there is the sign of good writing. They created characters I truly cared about and wanted to see happy. It definitely draws on my own fears as a mother and does so extremely well. For all the problems the series had, and it had many, it's achievements far outweigh everything else.

Yeah, I was sad that Masane had to go. She was so full of life, her love of Riko, her love of food, her brashness, she was so true of so many women I know. It was depressing how the power of the Witchblade forced her to fight to the end. What really got me was when Masane looked at the drawing Riko made of her and Riko next to a house she dreamed of living in with her Mom. Jeez, I started welling up. I will say Ms. Nodo who voiced Masane did a fantastic job with her range of emotions. A wonderful job! In the end, there was so much heart in this anime, it will be in my top 10 for awhile, especially Masane who is in my favs when it comes to females in anime, boobs and all ^_^.

Uh-hu.

Why is it so special if you get emotionally attached to anime characters ?

They are not one bit more or less real than characters of normal movies.

Plus, where did you get the bit that the witchblade wearer dies in the end ? Its implied, but not shown. If there would have been a third season, maybe they would have found a way around it.
