Firstly this movie is based on a great premise. But you can tell straight away the direction when they skip the whole journey to China. I was very unimpressed to see a european as the emperor, major flaw (you cant give him pointy eyebrows to disguise this!).
Also the Chinese characters speak Cantonese in the scenes not Mandarin which is a big flaw!!!

Yeah, it gave the impression of... we cast Asian actors in all the supporting roles, but the big guy has to be played by a white man or -- what?, nobody will watch?

I didn't like that the senior Polos left Marco in China alone. You don't expect films like this to be totally accurate, but that took too much license with historical fact.
shareThey say that Mandarin is newer than Cantonese and Cantonese closer to the way people used to speak. Probably both are inaccurate, but it's probably not worth it to have them speak medieval Chinese.
