why is this titled 'Gilgamesh'?

for anyone who watches this show: does the story have anything to do or has some influence from the book "Gilgamesh" by Herbert Mason?

the only thing i noticed that connects to the book is the name of one of the characters, Enkidu.

It's titled Gilgamesh because there are 10 characters (6 men and 4 women) who call themselves the Gilgamesh and they align themselves with a man called Enkidu who wish to finish his terrorist plot that he began some years ago.

The title comes from the Epic of Gilgamesh, which is the oldest story known to man. It predates Christ by about 10,000 years. Gilgamesh was the God-king central character in that story, and Enkidu was his enemy-turned-friend.

The anime, as well as the book you refer to, had references taken from the Epic of Gilgamesh.

You can read more about the epic by searching for Epic of Gilgamesh in wikipedia.

thanks for replying. i actually have the book (one of my top favorites). i tried looking it up here in IMDB to check if a movie was ever made out of it, coz i could only imagine how they could give justice in film the intensity and grandeur of the story.

this anime page was the only one that came up, and reading its very short description i only saw Enkidu's name as the only link to the original "Gilgamesh". in another forum i learned that there's also a graphic novel adaptation... but i'm still on the lookout for it.

Actually, the Epic of Gilgamesh somewhat directly figures into the story: Terumichi Madoka, who later nicknames himself "Enkidu" from the Chinese reading of the kanji characters in his name, was a scientist at the Heaven's Gate base researching Gilgamesh's tomb.

Lostn are you on drugs?
Gilgamesh is not the oldest story known to and it's definitely not 12.000 years old.

Just what exactly predates the Epic of Gilgamesh which earliest version are thought to have been from somewhere within the range of 2150 BC-2000 BCE?

reply

Well, it's the earliest that has any real significance then. But enlighten us by your knowledge, what epic would have come before? Anyway, you are right, it's not 12 000 years old. I guess it would be about 5 000 years old, but an exact time is unknown to historians, so it is to most of us too.

'The Epic Of Gilgamesh' Was the first illustrated story ever. An Ancient Mesopotamian king replaced the central character Gilgamesh with his own likeness and had it carved into the stone walls of his palace as a demonstration of his might and as a warning to foreigners visiting there.

The epic od Gilgamesh was the first story ever written down. it was craved in stoen and written in mud that dryed out. In fact it has never been found entact the version that we all know is from several diffent written verisons.

What I dont get is why arent there any adaptations at all resembling the orginal story?
