I truely loved this show

even if the ending annoyed me... I think the more I watch it the more I understand that it needed to happen.. ergh. but it was seriously the best anime I've ever seen.

To be honest I remembered watching 'Gilgamesh' about 6 years ago (the first two episodes or so) and wanting to watch it all, but now, that I've just finished watching it, I think it was quite an awful show. The dialogues were terrible and stiff, the dubbing sucked, the plot was sappy, over-intellectualised and predictable, the drawing was cliche and far worse than i.e. much older 'Ghost In The Shell'. Just NO.
If you want a REALLY good dark post-apocalyptic anime, try 'Ergo Proxy'.

I'm gonna have to disagree, each to his own though. I think the reason it isn't popular or well liked is because it isn't completely typical, all the reasons you listed (except 1) as to why you didn't enjoy it are what makes it individual.

I thought the dub was great, especially with The Countess, it wasn't the norm with high pitched voices and older women playing young boys which I personally think is fantastic. I didn't find the plot cliche or predictable though I do agree it was a bit sappy at the end but let's face it, which anime isn't? Its something to do with the Japanese culture.

As for being intellectualized I believe it was a technique to enhance the telling of the story, it doesn't force feed you all the information like in most animes, it gives you the facts so you can come to your own conclusion, not that it was "over" done, I think that in the last 6 episodes you get plenty of emotion from the characters.

When it comes to the art and design, this is purely up to your own tastes. I don't think it reflects GitS at all, I think it's original and haunting which adds to the atmosphere.

Now I've been referred to Ergo Proxy multiple times and to be perfectly honest I have tried to watch the show 5 times and haven't made it past the first 10 minutes, I find the whole set up boring, cliche and just another typical anime. That of course is only judging from reviews and the small amount of the show I would watch before I got bored.

I still think Gilgamesh is the best anime I've seen, everything else to me seems bland and typical and I think that's why Ergo Proxy doesn't appeal to me. There's no style to it, nothing that grabs me and makes me want to watch more. Even though you didn't enjoy Gilgamesh, you mentioned that even you wanted to watch more and everyone has their own tastes but something about it made you keep going with it.

like I said each to his own.

SLAUGHTER!
