good fighting action, crappy story

I thought the action was well worth watching, but the movie as a whole is rather crappy. So my advice to anyone who hasn't seen this movie yet is, keep your finger on the FF-button and skip everything that has no fighting in it! :)

They could have made such a good story, damn.

You are totally right- I loved the fighting scenes but the end was a complete disappiontment!!! Why put so much drama in a martial arts flick anyways?

reply

I disagree.

I like when a film is able to transcend genre stereotypes. The lead female character was the most interesting, and that hospital scene made my jaw hit the floor just as hard as any of the action scenes.

Lots of people are pissing and moaning over the dramatic elements in this film, so I'm going to watch it again over the next few days to make my final assessment, but as of now I rate this one a solid 7/10.

I agree with you, the ending and the "suprise" made me HATE the lead female character.

I would write it as the male lead discovers the shinanigans of the female char, then after he was well with his injury, he gives her a quick roundhouse on the neck CroCop style.... just kidding ^_^

BUT i still would rewrite the ending...

There's nothing wrong with genre mixing, but the story was very choppily told and didn't really make a lot of sense at times.

Poorly Lived and Poorly Died, Poorly Buried and No One Cried

No, not at all. For fighting, I think there are better movies. Ong Bak comes to my mind. But the story is pretty good for such a movie, and the ending pretty much perfect. Wouldn't have expected something so serious from a fighting movie. Being Asian there is also a lot of moral in this movie.

Well, moust people don't watch Martial Arts movies to see the story! It's all about the Martial Arts action and stunts!

reply

great movie don't understand why people hate the ending...
it's over dramatic but it definately is different and original.

Would you rather have it end really happy? like a typical movie.

Fatal Contact though i think is a mixed bag it's super cheesy at times and then it becomes over dramatic.

aka old school HK flicks... Unbalanced roller coaster rides! i loved it!

reply

I would have made it a bit less sad.

Wu Jing is shot, not in the head, but wakes up, heartbroken and suffering from his physical injuries. Goes to live in Henan with his friend. Gets out of the city for a more simple life. Something like that. Not fairy tale happy, but not super downer.

The selling point of the movie was definitely misleading. It's an Action Drama and not a straight Martial Arts film.

I dont think it was a big disappointment. But I do think it was not very well thought-out.
-Captain left after seeing Kong's injured body laying in the rain. The director should have him visit Kong at the hospital or something. May be while Kong was still unconscious
-The guy who was also orgainizing underground fighting. He lost the 3v3 bet, then lost the 1v1 bet. We see him kill his own fighter after the 1v1 fight. Someone like that wouldnt just accept his loss and disappear.
-After winning the 2nd to last fight, Kong saw the way the girl cheer. The expression on his face said it all. She cares more about winning than about his well-being. That was never followed through.
-The pimp and his men got beat up. Forgive me, but I dont think someone like him, who can get 10+ men with weapons in such short notice, would just accept defeat.
-The movie gives us multiple hints that Captain is a martial art expert. The pencil, the coin, and the pebble. The audience should at least see him in 1 real fight. The fight against the pimp's men was too short and not challenging. The practice fights against Kong are too restrained.
-I understand the purpose of the prostitute is to show us the main actress's past and her reason for being who she is. But I couldnt help wondering how it turn out.

yeah...the film tries to add elements of drama mixed with martial arts. I did enjoy the martial arts in this film since it was my first exposure to Wu Jing. He looks like he could be a big star. While watching the film I kept getting the feeling the girl was not in it for Kong they give you all the hints ie: her friend the prostitute and how she gives her advice as if she was really talking about herself. The ending was a bit overdone...but it tried to be different. Perhaps as the last post it could've added a bit more since I left the film feeling it lost it's mark.

At the end when he killed all those guys reminded me of Jing's character in SPL.

You know would have been really cool? Jing's character goes to jail and has to fight prison battles. When he is released he meets a crime lord named Won-Mo.

I for one am very glad that it turned out that the girl was just a bitch working for the bosses. It was such a fake romance and it was explained.
