Everything about Mike Myers in 'The Love Guru' is wrong on about a million different levels. The film mocks Hindu culture from start to finish, using an entire group of people as fodder in an extremely offensive and unfunny joke of a film.
True. Racism can be a 'victimless crime' (not that it is a crime, people have right to hate anything they want for as ridiculous reasons they want, freedom of thought, freedom of speech), but stealing is never a victimless crime. And it is a crime as well.
Not all thieves go to jail, though, so your logic is slightly fractured there.
Wat a baby. Y does everything have to be racist. Or.y does an actor have to be a racist. Grow.up. stop crying. This movie is not racist its just a character.
Agreed. I'm a liberal Californian (although, per this board, I was in fact born in Toronto, Ontario) and even I'm sick and tired of all this political correctness. Seems that a lot of people have no problem calling everyone racist whenever their particular culture is the butt of a joke. C'mon guys ... how many movies have been made where people from India were the butt, anyway? Including this movie I'm counting .... uh .... one (?). You don't hear the Jewish community or the LGBT community whine every time they are the butt of the joke ~ which incidentally is most of the time. I guess the difference is that Jews and Gays have a sense of humor. In essence, I'm sick and tired of people using the "race" card every time their culture is used for a bit of fun and silliness. It's unfortunate that so many cultures around the world have no sense of humor and are so easily slighted. In America we laugh at everyone, including ourselves. If that is offensive to other cultures around the world, then all I can suggest is to avoid American and / or any western comedies. Life is too short to be so damn serious !!!
I see your point, but are you saying 'blackface' is not problematic at all?
I honestly don't even really know what to think about these things. On one hand, a world where you can have fun at the expense of some culture, is a more fun and free world. Every culture can mock every other culture freely = everyone is equal.
However, thinking about the whole 'blackface' thing, as innocent as the motives may have been back in the day, I wonder what the core reason is why it would not fly today. Fear? Is there something INHERENTLY immoral or insulting about coloring your body temporarily? Is it because of 'untruthful depiction of a group of people'?
If I paint my face blue, no one would bat an eye. But if I paint it dark brown, and dance around making funny sounds, people would probably kill me.
These things would be so important to discuss honestly, openly and without prejudice or prebuilt hatred - just talking about why something is wrong, and whether it's inherently wrong, and what makes it so, and why something should or should not be allowed, etc.
People get so easily offended these days, it's hard to relate. I wouldn't mind if someone created a replica of me and made it do silly things and sound all silly. People know I am not really like that.
I think many black people are actually pretty tolerant, mature and adult about many of these things, and have a sense of humor about such stuff. I've watched many black people's reactions to all kinds of 'racial humor', Bill Burr for example, and they have had a good time and weren't judgmental at all.
Eddie Murphy has been known to wear a 'whiteface', disguising himself as a white man and no one seems to mind. Why should races reversed be any different?
Women have done these 'social experiments' by dressing up and making up their face to look like men, and it doesn't seem to cause any controversy.
The whole 'offending' thing is very biased, unbalanced and unfair mainly because we're not on equal standing
I think THAT is a bigger problem than the 'blackface' or 'cultural appropriation' style 'racism' (if it can be called that) itself.
White, heterosexual men have basically no rights in this world, every so-called 'minority' and women and children and even animals stomp all over them and they have no recourse.
Gay men used to be 'funny, weird, quirky tokens' in TV, but now the only allowed clown is the white, heterosexual male anymore. This needs to change. Either all genders (I think there's like 2.5 genders, considering the hard-to-define androgynes or hermaphrodites as well) and all races are equally 'clowny' and can be poked fun out of, or no genders and no races are allowed to be made fun of.
This world oppresses one very particular (but big) group of people, while elevating and celebrating others, and it'd be insane to try to discuss these things rationally and on equal basis as long as this is the situation.
I don't mind if white, heterosexual men are being fun of, as long as everyone gets to make fun of every other group as well.
