Jeff Foxworthy hosting the CMT music awards

Funny quote from Jeff...speaking about the Dixie Chicks' Grammy Awards.

"Their big song was "Not Ready to Make Nice" which is great because we're not ready to care..."

"Tugboats and arson....those are the only ideas I ever get from you guys..."

i thought, not only was it not funny, but also in bad taste (especially since they were nominated for awards that night). for the country music crowd (not you creekballa) who complains that the chicks just won't let it go, they still have to continue to get their digs in.

let it go. it's over. their careers have not been ruined and they continue to be successful (albeit with a different crowd). why do the jokes and public digs need to continue?

hey country music, GET OVER IT!

i also heard that mr. foxworthy went off on some strange tangent regarding the war, going to church, and the kinds of people who listen to country music.

The problem that I have with the comment is the Not Ready to Make Nice is about the death threats and such that they received.

I thought that the reference (I believe the "Not ready to care" comment was directed toward the Chicks in general, and not toward the song) was tasteful, but easily mis-construed, unfortunately.

I agree that it's time to move on, but I think when the Chicks go and make this movie, they opened up some doors that COULD have been closed by now. I think there are some childish references being made on both sides, but I thought that Foxworthy's wasn't one. The bigger issue for the Chicks is the dumb hillbillies that continue to throw death threats and such.

Foxworthy cut in on a lot of people in his opening monologue. Most of them got pretty good responses from everyone, including the people he was roasting.

i guess my problem with the comment is that it is not usually in line with the way that award show hosts make fun of nominees. it wasn't good hearted poking fun, it was meant to be rude and get a rise out of the audience members who dislike them. and that's just playing into it and continually fanning the flames.

i wasn't saying that the chicks haven't reopened the debate or stirred the pot themselves, but far more often i hear from that side that dislikes them that they just can't let it go, when i find that those against them are the ones who can't seem to let it go. everytime the chicks are in the public eye, for whatever reason these days (movie, album, awards), suddenly there is an onslaught on these boards. it's almost as if those people are horrified and disappointed that their careers haven't been ruined. if people no longer like them, fine, don't listen to them, but move on.

and i've read a number of posts from the cmt boards and A LOT of people were unhappy with foxworthy after that and were planning on writing complaints to CMT about it. and not just about the chicks comments.

Oh, Foxworthy was most definitely just playing to the crowd. He actually got a pretty good reaction to the joke. Now, that could be because there are a lot of rednecks there and it could be just because a lot of people think the Chicks were wrong. That's not for me to personally decide.

I thought that the joke was intended for good humor, sort of a crack on the Chicks and the Grammys, perhaps. I don't know how best to describe what I'm trying to say. As a country music fan myself, and a person who disagrees with what the Chicks said (to an extent) I can sort of see where the joke was headed. I don't think that the joke was meant to intend that people are upset that the Chicks haven't been ruined, but rather that country music will go on without them.

It really surprises me that a bunch of people were unhappy with the joke. Have you heard any of the reasons for the complaints? Did they just feel it was the wrong time for a joke like that, or was there some other factors? On any level, if people were upset with the joke, then good for them making comments.

I think Foxworthy is a very funny man, but he's very harmless as well. You'll see him making fun of everybody, including himself. If the comment was made by somebody else, even Larry the Cable Guy perhaps, then I can see a HUGE gripe.

"Tugboats and arson....those are the only ideas I ever get from you guys..."

i think a lot of the problem that people had with the joke was that they just thought it was in poor taste and meant to stir the hornet's nest. i just don't think it was good natured digging, it was meant differently. most of the comments that people who dislike it made were more towards cmt, because they are essentially allowing foxworthy to be their mouthpiece. i think it was disappointment that cmt was playing into this drama for laughs and ratings.

and i actually like jeff foxworthy, i find his humor rather good natured and harmless, which was why i was disappointed to hear him making such politically fueled, mean spirited jokes.

reply

Poor taste, yes, but he can say what he wants.
I'm with the Dixie Chicks; I agree with the things I have heard them say, but I don't let this bother me.

Free speech, right?
He's allowed to sound stupid.

Foxworthy is an idiot with a failed career that can't even touch the Dixie Chicks. If redneck jokes are as clever as he can get, then a career as a bartender would be perfect for him.

reply

Failed career?

HA!

"Tugboats and arson....those are the only ideas I ever get from you guys..."

Why is it not okay for Jeff Foxworthy to make a comment about someone that was in "bad taste" but its okay for the dixie chicks? It sounds like the same thing to me.

reply

the difference is that dixie chicks comments were about an illegal war where women and children were being killed , foxsworthy's comments were about those who had the courage to stand up to that president who waged this illegal war , iraq had nothing to do w/ 9/11 and bush lied a to us and led many to join the service , and as a result many good young americans are dying b/c of it , so if thats ok w/ you then , well what can I say ,
