Does she have a death wish or a drive towards self-destruction? She undermined her own escape from the start, tipped off her husband and deliberately riled him and his wife and parents up so much that they would be fanatical about getting the police to find her. Then she left clues behind as to where they might go and went one of the most obvious places anyone would check - the nearest bus depot. Was she hoping to get caught? This didn't make sense to me.

Interesting question. You might be on to something. She might have unconsciously known that a new life was not really possible in Canada. What I found great about this movie was that everything she was doing was an attempt to show her son how much she loved him. She risked getting caught, and even risked getting shot by bringing that gun into play - but all of it was for him. Not necessarily to get him out of his current life, but to show him how much he was worth to her.
