Horrible ending

I just can't stand movies like this......give me a beginning, a story, and an ending, thats all I ask. I hate ambiguous, leave you wondering what the director was smoking kind of endings. What a waste of 2 hours.....

reply

Pretend the ending of Gully first turning up to the pool hall didn't happen. Now you have a story and an ending.

reply

When the truck hits the pole, she dies. But, then they show the kid going into the pool hall. WEIRD.

But, I popped on the Director's commentary and found out the truth. AND IT IS STUPID!

She dies. But, the director didn't want to end on such a low note, so he slapped on the kid's first meeting with the pool hall owner. HOW DUMB IS THAT? Literally, just so the movie wouldn't end with her death. Not to change the story, or make it seem like what the previous poster said. Just, because...

reply

All I can say is, "duuuhhh". If you didn't know that's what the ending was, you just aren't thinking. But anyway the thing I thought was dumb was why did she confront David causing him to call the police?

Play the game existence 'til the end...of the beginning...

reply

Exactly what I thought too. What the heck was she doing going to David when she could have just slipped away with Gulls? That was really setting herself up. I knew then that it was going to end badly but still I watched. The other foreboding clue to her demise was the bloody fake gun...I knew it was going to get her killed. Sometimes it's just no fun being right.

Urrrghh...a truly rotten end to a good movie and great acting. What a disappointment!

reply

So, she does die then?

I mean, just because the truck rolls into the pole, it doesn't mean she died. It could mean she passed out or grew weak due to blood loss.
They really should've put that in the movie. I mean, I can put two and two together, but there are multiple conclusions you can come to with this ending.

reply

I dunno about you but it is pretty obvious to me that she died. With the truck and the blood and the ending where the boy go into the pool shop.

But I agree it is a bad ending. It make the whole movie obsolete. Also, she shouldn't have talked to the ex-husband. She could have called him when they are safe. Make the son leave a note or something to give them more time to get into safety. Still, it is understandable that she isn't too bright for the kind of things she is doing to make a living.

Anyway, good acting by Famke. Haven't seen her in a proper role for a long time.

Actually it confused me too haha. But thank you for pointing out it was a flashback! I'm not all that good at figuring out endings ahahaha.

This was a fantastic movie, and the ending, I think, was fine.

reply

I guess it reflects real life but this is the movies and the ending sucked. It seemed like a nice upbeat ending and then wham!

In the end she sabotaged he escape plans by using the guy's truck and apparently they knew here to look because of a postcard?

reply

I thought the ending was quite haunting and effective. It's refreshing to see a current film that doesn't end on some phony upbeat note that wraps everything up all nice and neat in a bow.

"We're all part Shatner/And part James Dean/Part Warren Oates/And Steven McQueen"

reply

It was a decent effort by Eigeman, who I loved from the Whit Stillman movies. The ending wasn't great. Of course the main character was an idiot pretty much from the word go. Clearly her plan was crap. At the end when she is obviously surrounded, any normal person would know it was over and give up. Instead she gets herself shot and endangers the child in the process. Overall pretty pointless.

reply

It's a realistic movie, that's the whole point. If you want fairy tales stick to disney.

She did what she had to do and she died trying to save her son. Sad movie but in no way bad.

EXACTLY !

sure, going to the movies is for escaping reality, for entertainment, but i'm saying you people are one-dimensional human beings if all you want are happy endings *every* time !

and from the poster above;
At the end when she is obviously surrounded, any normal person would know it was over and give up. Instead she gets herself shot and endangers the child in the process. Overall pretty pointless.
yeah, right - like YOU know what "normal" is.

were you born with a silver spoon and daddy bought your car for you ?

Lauren Prosnan : Hollywood is God's way of saying America matters.

Don't tell me...you're one of those people who watches an episode of cops and roots for the idiot who tries to run from the cops - even though they get caught nearly every time!

Overall, yeah, I do think it's pretty "normal" to obey the police.

I wasn't aware that you had to be born with a silver spoon and have your father buy you a car in order to have the good sense to know that when you're surrounded by the cops you should probably just do what they say. You aren't likely to get away unscathed. Or maybe it's just "the man" keeping you down!

reply

Well Inpurisnatura's answer was simply unpolite to me.
I don't understand what you meant with the "silver spoon" but I think you have a good point - there is no "normal" when you get surrounded by policeman with guns. It puts you in an extreme stress-situation where logical thinking is difficult, everybody can look that up, called "distress" in psychology (at least in German).

What wonders me is that 1. the police shot at her, she did not even take the gun in her hand (but I am not from the US and don't know the law there, I just know that shooting seams to be as normal as eating in US-movies) and 2. then they let her (try to) drive away? That does not make any sense.
So to me the end is not only sad, also not explained and not logical.
