According to an interview with the producer, Mo Ramchandani, it seems as if Jewel was too high maintence and was cut. If you read this interview, it gives a lot of good information on what happened to the film and what will happen to it in the future.
Also, I'm not realy sure on what happened with Jewel, I'm just speculating from context clues in the interview:

According to her blog i read at one point she mentioned that they had to keep going back to do reshoots of scenes. Sounds like the production crew were really amateur and unprofessional and the whole cast probably got pretty annoyed.
The really stupid thing is if it was the producer's choice to get rid of Jewel and not her leaving of her own accord then they seem to have lost what was the main draw of this film!
Most of the buzz was from Jewel's fans.
I hope Karma gets them and this film flops now.

Yeah, but they've now got Lance Henriksen, who unlike Jewel (who hasn't been in any movies at all) is a veteran of several hit movies, I'd consider him more of a draw than her, the only people who consider Jewel a draw are Firefly fans and guys who think she's hot

Not to mention the fact that she was amazing on both Firefly and Stargate Atlantis. You don't have to be in huge movies to be a good actor/actress.
