*sigh* SPOLIER

Why did they make a remake of Predator? The only difference there is less action since it's not fron the POV of the commandos. But really, are you allowed to rip off THIS much content from another movie and company? They are going to do a 'real' reboot in a little while anyway.

That being said, the movie looked good and was entertaining.

Maybe the filmmakers thought Predator was made so long ago nobody would remember it? I don't know. Some of the rip-offs of Predator in this movie are shameful:

1) Dreadlocks on the "beasts"

2) The thermal type vision

3) Using mud (also in this film, grape type fruit) to hide from "beasts"

4) Top "beast" takes mask/helmet off for final battle vs. human

5) (more from Predator sequels) beasts back off/accept human after she kills one of their own

I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones I remember at the moment. So blatent.

The editing was awful. There were some scenes that were cut so bad I was laughing.

The whole "missing link" thing was pretty awful. Did I miss something or were these "beasts" suppossed to be the evolutionary step before homo sapien? Because if that's the case, I think they need to keep searching for another link.

Irvin Kershner must be rolling in his grave.

The entire cave sequence is a straight-up rip-off of "The Descent."

I had not thought about that but it's accurate. Think I'll go make a movie combining all of my favorite scenes and try to profit from it. Anyone have a few million I can borrow?

reply

HA! "The Descent". That's good. I didn't even think about that until your post, but you're exactly right about that cave scene. I guess I wasn't thinking broadly enough in terms of movie rip-offs.

What about the cave scene did you think was 'a straight-up rip-off' of Descent? Granted it has been a few years since I've seen the film but the only thing I thought was similar was the suspenseful feel and her desire to quietly make her way in and out.

I did think that the idea was very similar to predator. I thought the movie was surprisingly good though...for instance, I thought the cinematography was great and there was some symbolism that made moments special...

I was a huge fan of predator when I was young so it could be that I just enjoyed the switch in typical gender roles making the lead woman defeat the male 'predator' or beast.

anyhew, I am curious about other people's thoughts.

I think the filmmakers did it as a nod to Predator in a sense. I was thinking rip off until the one guy whispered "Over here" to another. It's kind of like the homages a lot of the even big time directors do nowadays. And this film had enough elements that were different.

It is quite similar to the scene in "The Descent" when the main character finds the room full of dead bodies and body parts, including her near-death friend who had gotten a pickaxe to the throat by Juno in the earlier fight by accident. In that scene, the friend begs the main character to kill her because, like here, she's too injured to make it out alive without endangering the main character. So the main character kills her best friend. Here, she kills her fiance.

Added to that was the fact that the bad guys have inferior eyesight, which the main character uses to her advantage to sneak around them.

Anyone ever notice that a major portion of movies that are "hits" have films identical to them just lower budget. this film is just many years to late...... lol

reply

Predator, Dagon, Descent, amd Turistas. This movie has it all. Nothing original though.

It would have been nice if this was a predator prequel, would have made more sense.

Ice Ice............MMMAAAAAAAANNNNN

The ripped-off pieces from Predator are obvious, but there are enough differences to make this film distinct:

- Castaways on a deserted island
- Two women as main characters and another as a minor character
- The love story
- The antagonists are of the earth, not alien
- There's an entire tribe of "monsters," not just one
- No commandos
- No big military fight
- The main protagonist is a woman, and non-militant

They got most of those parts from "The Descent" ;)
