So, I let my son pick a DVD from Poundland for us to watch tonight, and he picked Speed Racer. Now, this film has never interested me, and I can remember it being torn apart by critics when it was released.

I have absolutely no idea why people panned this film. Yes, the visuals are slightly headache inducing, the plot is thinner than Donald Trump's real hair, and it is nowhere near the original cartoon it draws from, but it is just over 2 hours of out-and-out fun. We both really enjoyed it. One of those films where I'm thinking "Why have I not watched it before now?".

While it does have it's issues, I think one of the issue it faced that wasn't itself to blame for, was it release when everything was pushing to be dark and gritty. This wasn't what people or critics as a whole where wanting at the time.

Sadly as evidenced by the rise of cinematic universes in hollywood, people want more of the same. It is a shame that more of the same to me gets boring very quickly.
