Speed Racer: Now Officially a Guilty Pleasure.
A “cult film” means a grass roots, positive word of mouth type of marketing turns a shunned or box office bomb into a well-respected success long after the fact....like “The Big Lebowski” for example. Or even “The Beastmaster” which home video gave it a second life despite its failure at the box office, it became one of the most played movies on American cable television develop an appreciative audience and developed into a cult film. that eventually the fanbase grew so big studios saw profit in sequels...even though they were terrible.
So you see, real Cult Classics get a huge fan base...(not 5 or so crybaby fanatics, and few stragglers that kinda dug it on an IMDb forum)...and are reassessed as classics many years after failing in the cinema, by becoming regular fixtures on cable television and/or profitable sellers on home video, even inspire their own film festivals. They end up becoming a profitable business venture years after failed wide release. A movie is only a cult film when it ironically becomes a widely accepted hit after it bombed. (i.e. Blade Runner, Idiocracy, Tron, The Big Lebowski, True Romance, etc)
Speed Racer has not achieved anything remotely close to being anything more than a widely panned bonafide box office failure. It ops lists as all time box office disasters, it killed many of the stars careers. Face the facts, it's a turd. With no widely accepted cult redemption anywhere on its horizon, not even a tiny bit...which by 7 years after their initial release REAL Cult Classics like Blade Runner and The Big Lebowski were already picking up steam and generating genuine cult status. Speed Racer has nothing generating 7 years later other than a tiny obsessed base of fanboys here calling and proclaiming it as a “Cult Classic”. And a tinkling of links to personal blogs praising it. You can BS it any way you want, reality says it is pure fantasy. And really just tossing a buzz word label you clearly don’t understand on a turd movie to upsell it waters down the meaning and makes it an empty marketing buzzword. You calling it a Cult Classic when it clearly is not, is pathetically delusional. The line from Princess Bride comes to mind....”I don’t think that word means what YOU think it does.”
The increasing abuse of the term “cult classic” on any failed, craptastic movie to try and generate buzz, or defend an opinion, either by the obsessed virgin fans on this forum or forced by a mainstream publication makes the term become meaningless or an elastic, catchall for anything slightly maverick, strange, or just not good. Truth is the term “cult classic” itself is a weak concept, reliant on subjectivity; different groups can interpret films in their own terms. You can say Rocky Horror is amazing...there are probably more people that would say it’s the dumbest thing they’ve ever seen. But you CAN’T deny that Rocky Horror is a bonafide Cult Classic. It has enough of a fan base that theaters still run the movie decades later, it has conventions, it’s referenced in popular culture. Blade Runner and Tron have spun out many collectors videos, influenced filmmakers for decades later. They have turned from bomb to success....so much so that studios saw a need to make sequels for the droves of fans. The Speed Racer movie....has none of that. It widely regarded as a huge bomb, and when people say it’s terrible...they mean it. And there are no repeat midnight showings, no collector DVD’s, no evidence to support that it’s misunderstood and beloved by a large subculture of people.
Now I know you all hate me because I talk common sense, and you all love to post things you think will irritate me. Fact is ripping on you guys is fun...Why would i get mad that there is a group of sad little people that hate me for being right all the time. But I want to make it a point to end this today, here and now. It's time to recognize you will never beat me. No amount of BS is ever going to be the definitive middle finger to all the times I've jammed you all up here, and defied your bullying tactics. I mean even, calling it a Cult Classic without the evidence to back it up reeks of desperation to shut me up from pointing out all of you fanatics foolish BS on this forum since the release. You all hate me for one reason. You all managed to bully and troll anyone that had an opinion not like your own. I’m the only one that never backed down. Pure and simple. I always could back up my points with hard indisputable facts. You all hated that. (haha, so much so you sore losers made an entire post about me here to troll me) The sheer hatred from not being able to bully me away with nonsense, stupidity, Troll me, Obsessive need to top me and find some desperate internet win with fictional BS, I withstood all your baseless, pointless, disgusting character slurs about me and family, and desperate name calling, ganging up on me 3, 5, 6 to one spitting ignorance and then pathetic boasting of internet wins you never had. Spoiler alert: gang stupidity...is still stupidity. Just because you have a gang of people as dumb as you backing you up...STILL doesn’t make you right. All that disgusting behavior and it never got you that win you all needed. And for what? A stupid movie. Go back and read some of the post on here. You trolls should be ashamed. When you couldn't bully me you got personal and more nasty. I stuck to facts, in the end all that toxic behavior you all showed...and I still won every argument on here, and owned every one of you that bullied me and others. I walk away knowing everything I've ever said here is right and I won. Well, the stuff you crybabies didn't run to get deleted because you hated that I was right and owned you. 7 years later you guys are still methodologically going through posts and getting the juicy parts where I was right and you were wrong deleted...pathetic. That's REAL hate, THAT is obsession. The proof is all over the forum, I don't need to make anything up, I never had to...That's why you all really hate me
That said, Speed Racer is a guilty pleasure. Suck it up, that’s the solid indisputable fact. So bad, it’s good. Like Showgirls and Snakes on a Plane. I know that is as cool sounding as being a cult classic like Blade Runner but the real difference between a guilty pleasure and a cult classic can be as simple as the number of fans behind the film. The fanbase for this movie just doesn’t support a cult film status, or dilute the the meaning of a classic. "It's a Wonderful Life" is a classic, Speed Racer doesn't even come anywhere close to being a classic. Sorry. But, you guys are passionate, and it has a few people that dig it.
I wouldn’t call Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo a Cult Classic, But love it's campy ass. It’s a guilty pleasure and I will watch it if it comes on. Even netflix’ed it a few times. It’s awful, most people would crinkle their nose at it, but it’s fun, and I don’t care. Would i go on the forum it has here and rip anyone apart for saying it sucks? no. I know it sucks, But I like it anyway. A lesson you fanatics maybe need to embrace and learn. With that, I let you all go in peace. Go enjoy your movie.
