A question about Penny (big spoiler)
How did Penny know at the time of Sallie's murder that Sallie was pregnant by Penny's father? It's seems to me that she learned that later in the story.

shareMaybe she didn't. I came into the episode after it had started, so I may be missing details, but at the end all Penny says is "I meant to. She had it coming." She may have killed her for a different reason, totally unaware of Sallie's involvement with Penny's dad.
shareJudging by the facts revealed, Penny probably didn't know about the pregnancy, but knew about the relationship when she fatally attacked Sallie, meaning to wound her, but not kill her. Obviously she had no idea about how mortal such a wound would be on a pregnant girl as opposed to a non-pregnant one. Would she have done the same had she known? I don't think so, given how she reacted to figuring out about Tennison's past abortion. But then, who knows,

She said she meant to kill Sallie. Watch the end again. "No, I meant to kill her. Sallie had gone too far."
And to the OP: She knew about the pregnancy because she was Sallie's best friend. Sallie had told the father long before her death, and she had told Penny as well.
. . . . . . . .
i just watched and replayed the ending, having seen it for the first time tonight, 2/1/11.
jane asks penny"you didn't mean to kill her, did you? you meant to kill the baby."
penny says "I meant to.but sally was takin' a piss"
it confused me; strange choice of words for the screenwriter to end this pivotal scene.
However, penny definitely did not say 'she had it comin'" or 'she deserved it".

she said "taking the piss" which is a British expression for going to far/ taking advantage. So it fits.
shareYES! i found that out but forgot to repost about it on this thread (i did it on another thread). i'm amazed that americans on this board did not make a ruckus about this, because that expression is unknown in u.s.

Well, I was totally in the dark about the expression, but thanks to the posts on this forum I discovered the meaning of "taking a piss." :)
shareJust to re-clarify, the expression is 'taking THE piss' (not 'a' piss)
Here is the best explanation i found. (again, we do not use this expression in the u.s.)

I thought they were perfect final words. It was partly dismissive, part posturing (Penny didn't want to be seen as a messed up kid who didn't know what she was doing, even if she was). They're words that would stay with Tennison more than a blander "she deserved it", and that's the point - the final battle scar of her career.
