Why would you hold clothes up to yourself in a change room, instead of trying them on?

Exactly. I dumped my popcorn on the people in front of me and walked out of the theater.

Simple. You are filtering options.

The first pass is seeing if the color really goes with your skin tone or body shape. The second pass is to see if it is comfortable enough to wear.
