Would anyone really do this?

Anyone out there who would really do this for 5 million. If not 5 million, how much would you do it for?

reply

I would do it for 10 million, but only if I was at a desperate point of my life

reply

I would do it for publicity and hope I dont have to go. If I do have to go, ill just back out.

I hate how IMDb signatures look like part of the post.

reply

Thats what I was thinking. Especially if you came down to the 2nd last when your odds are 50/50. Just back out

reply

If I was proper down and out and desperate for cash, maybe

"And what am I supposed to do while you're on a yellow brick quest for a brain?"

reply

I don't think you could back out tbh, all the contestants probably had to sign an agreement saying they had to go through with it.

The only way I think you wouldn't have to do it is if you were the last contestant and everyone else had survived, because it wouldn't be a game anymore it would be a suicide.

And to answer the original question.

The only way I would do this is if I had lost everything, had no one love me, and actually wanted to kill myself anyway.

reply

There isn't a way for them to stop you from backing out, it's just a matter of what the penalty would be for doing so. The contract would probably have to be pretty harsh, like lose 5 million and everything you own.

reply

Actually you would just give up your chance at 5 million, and they would probably have alternates :)

I'm sitting here, thinking up a figure that'd be worth a 1/6 chance of DEATH, like $50 million or something... but then I had to laugh. I don't know about other countries, but in Canada they just hand you a cheque for the full amount, (no taxes) all at once (none of this "we'll pay you or your heirs the prize over the course of 300 years" crap) if you were to win a game show prize... or in this case, A LOTTERY!!! It's not like I'm a "Man In A Hermetically Sealed Apartment" or something - on my way home from work I stopped & BOUGHT OTHER STUFF from *3* different stores that sell Lottery Tickets! The tickets are $2.00 each; and, this week, the prize is $42,000,000.
I apologize for going wayyyy OT, but like I said - I just thought it was crazy and/or funny that I'm considering getting close to DYING (don't kid yourself - 1 in 6 is VERY bad odds when you're talking about death) for fifty mil when I won't pay two bucks to have a chance at fourty-two... I mean, I know the odds for one are obviously not even in the same league as the odds for the other one, but still. When I started this post I was thinking a fifty-million payday for putting a loaded gun to my head and pulling the trigger. NOW I realize I have 63 minutes to run down the street and get in on a chance to win tens, hundreds, thousands... hell, MILLIONS of dollars. And like I said, all at once & nobody taking ANY of my prize money! Not for taxes, lottery fees, or whatever stupid crap the government comes up with next. (Hi America! Not making fun of you AT ALL! Just thinking about how I know more about the history of Federal Taxes in America than ANYTHING "historical" about Canadian Income Tax [but NOT Federal *SALES* Tax - I'm old, I was around when the GST came in!], or anything AT ALL about taxation in any other country on Earth.)

As the Irish say, I'm going to stop RABBITTING now - sorry for taking up your time.

there was a time in my life that I would do it for a lot less than 5 mil. But right now, I wouldnt do it, not even for 100 mil.

never. especially because it's televised.. what a tacky way to die.

reply

Not unless is to save a loved one.

reply

If I had a terminal illness & needed the money to take care of my family, then maybe. But I can't think of any other circumstances.

reply

I know I am in the minority, but I would do it. You have an 83% chance that you won't pull the trigger with the real bullet. Those are great odds!! Now if my kids were over 18 I would go on the show.

reply

You are mis-stating the odds, because the odds of you avoiding death get worse depending upon your shooting order, assuming no one before you shoots himself.

The odds of shooting yourself are as follows, assuming the bullet was not fired with any previous trigger pulls:

First Trigger Pull: 1/6 (16.67%)

Second Trigger Pull: 1/5 (20%)

Third Trigger Pull: 1/4 (25%)

Fourth Trigger Pull: 1/3 (33%)

Fifth Trigger Pull: 1/2 (50%)

Sixth Trigger Pull: 1/1 (100%)

reply

You also have to figure in the odds of the first person shooting themselves and everyone else gets paid 5mill for doing nothing.

reply

I just watched this movie last night. I was totally riveted the last half-hour -- although the final five minutes almost ruined it.

Anyway, like you, I was also calculating the odds as each person took their turn. You're right, of course.

A better way to do it would be to spin the cylinder after each contestant takes a turn. That way each person would have a true one-in-six chance of taking the fatal bullet.

Since the "order" would no longer matter, every contestant would have to take a turn, enjoying the exact same odds, until someone blows their brains out.

On the positive side, it would also mean that on some shows everyone would survive!

reply

Is your question "Would anybody sign up for this?" or is your question "Would anybody actually pull the trigger?"? Those are two totally different questions.

Many, many would sign up - for the chance to be on TV and for the relatively good chance of "winning".

How many would actually pull the trigger? Probably not many (but, as I say in another thread, if you want to commit suicide anyway, this would be the ideal vehicle to do so).

And to the person that said they probably couldn't back out because they would be contractually obligated to pull the trigger - what are they gonna do, walk up, take the gun from the person and execute them? Perhaps in the distant future, but not in the context of this film/time/setting.

i'd do it only if the amount of money should increase as the odds go higher , for instance 1/6 would be 25 million, 1/5 would be 50 million 1/4 100 mill , 1/3 200mil , 1/2 500 mil and if the 6th person doesnt have to shoot themselves but they get 1 million . That is the only way i'd do it and im begging sweet jesus I'm the 6th person .

Then again they cant successfully force someone into pulling that trigger . So this type of show wouldn't work , this would work . 6 prisoners not on death row, who have more than 10 year sentence without parole , for crimes that are either drug related , or white collared crimes such as grand larceny , racketeering , embezzlement,3 strikes law. Would have a chance of getting their freedom . If they don't pull the trigger they are staying in jail , if they pull the trigger and survive their free the 6th person if alive stays in jail .

That would be a show.

reply

The odds are exactly the same for all contestants, 1/6. It doesn't matter what order you go in as once the chamber has been spun the bullet has been "assigned" to a contestant.

My mum's seen a ghost!

reply

I think if you are willing to do this, you are nuts and deserve to get a bullet in your brain. Here's another thing: Even if you won the 5 million, you still have to pay taxes on it, so you might not want to win.

reply

Even if you won the 5 million, you still have to pay taxes on it, so you might not want to win.

You'd rather die than win a sizeable fraction of 5 million dollars? ;)

reply

Yeah, game show winnings are taxable income. So even if you won the 5 million, you still have to pay taxes on it, so you aren't really winning 5 million.

reply

Hence "sizeable fraction of 5 million dollars"
