OK did anyone else think it was unrealistic how when she was in high school, so many fine men wanted Fantasia? I mean, I'm sure she had boyfriends but Rodney and the rapist were so good looking! And her friends were like "you like like a model" when she had on a Target halter top. All of her friends looked better than her. That was definitely some revisionist history in terms of casting.

Wow, u guys ever heard that saying beauty is in the eye of the beholder? That standard of beauty once again shows its "ugly" face. If I'd ask you to define what beauty is what would you tell me? someone could not be physically attractive to you but then again there personality can unveil a beauty. But an attractive person can be beautiful/handsome but there personality can be a real easy turn off.
But anyway I'm a Christian, who believes that we've all been created by the Lord and He didn't make anyone less of anything. That standard of beauty was created and has since trickled down continually into diff generations. For instance alot of ppl don't find Alec Wek (African top model) to be pretty, and thas b/c a lot of folk are looking at her through the eyes that long hair, light skin etc etc is beauty. When in truth beauty comes in different packages to different ppl.
The only way certain things will change, is when we as a society let them go. We continue to perpetuate these things, passing them on. I mean why do I keep hearing about young girls killing themselves to be skinny? b/c once any celebrity puts on 5pounds, the media runs wild with it and it becomes she's fat. So now to get back, they work out. Now what does that say to a society? it's a sick cyle and Iknow I've digressed a bit but I just felt the need to say all that. agree with me or not, it's the way I see it.

Umm actually the casting in this movie perpetuates the stereotypes even more.
Why can't Fantasia (who is average looking) be with average looking guys in her movie? They were practically models. So fake and makes it worse for this so-called girl killing herself for her looks if she sees even Fantasia has bought into this fake image.
And I never said Fantasia was ugly. I'm not ugly but I have never had a boyfriend that looked as good as the dudes Fantasia supposedly talked to in high school!

shareI think the point of that part is the "work what you get" that she said to herself in the mirror. She felt ugly and so she used her body and sexy clothes, fake hair and make-up to (pardon the pun) make up for it. The guys were obviously checkin' her for the booty, as you know guys will make a pass for anything they think they have a chance to bang.
Which is evident in the fact that the so called "cute guy" actually turned around and raped her so his "cuteness" doesn't count. My guess is he was cast for the part because he was Debbie Allen's son.

Oh and did you realize that the attention she recieved from both Chico's character and the other guy was negative attention. She wasnt capturing the eye of the guy that's gonna do her right. but an abuser and rapist.

I suppose the point is she was more interested in boys and fashion, than school. Ultimately prompting her to flunk out. But you know how guys are, you can look all wrong, but if you got booty/long hair...you in!

Omgosh that was like the most BS I have heard this week! Why can't fantasia have good looking guys liking her? Has it ever come to your attention that not all guys like the "whatever u consider pretty" girls, fantasia is an "average, beautiful black girl" that certain guys attract. Not everyone likes little ms. Make up or light skin diva or mixed whatever...& the vibe I got from that post was str8 I dk wtf!

I have known people who we're considered cute or pretty but they dated some of the most attractive that I have seen. I think someone said it before but what's unattractive to one person may be attractive to the next. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Granted both the rapist and her child's father were numbskulls...not great catches....they were interested in her whether for sex or other reasons. Anyhoo, I'm glad she turned her life around and made something of herself.

Its true, because I know both crowds. I got a friend whose not attractive at all but has no self esteem, has NO man and the only man she snagged used her for the sole purpose of pleasure cause she was so desperate to do anything to keep him and she gave off that signal all the time. I got another friend who is not that attractive as well, but shes with a different guy every time I talk to her which is not that much, but she has a very high esteem and shes sweet, that might have something to do with it as well.
I'm just saying what I witness. If you walk around, so secure of yourself, thinking you're just the best **** in the world, it makes a man swoon. I dunno, its psychotic, they're attracted to that.
P.S. If its not that, beauty really is within the eye of the beholder. Any non superficial idiot knows that.

Not to get too philosophical, but what is beauty?
Really.
Does beauty begin and end with body parts? How about a scent...or the melody of a voice; how about a swagger or swish? Cannot a person have a ravishing, captivating idea or way of expressing him/herself. I've heard a man talking about falling in love with a woman because she taught him how to listen to God: a love/lust/passion/rite of passage/sexual-spiritual enlightenment/discovery/post-orgasmic experience such as that does not pander itself to the mundane, small details of the physical.
I don't write that to short Fantasia: she's grade A woman in my book and there's *no one* who's "too hot" for her, then or now.

I love what you said!!! Absolutely beautiful! People get so caught up in physical looks that they forget to look inside of a person. Fantasia has a beautiful humble spirit. She pulled herself together and went after her dreams, not just for her, but for her child. So her child could have an example of what tenacity and character is. I applaud her for letting her adversities in life make her stronger and not weak. Who cares what she looks like, when she opens her mouth she makes angels look down from heaven! The girl is bad! She is blessed and unfortunately that's what make some people angry. They have to find some type of fault within her to make her look bad, so they talk about her appearance. I am a black woman, brown skinned with thick lips, hips and behind and I'm proud...and so should Fantasia be. All the fine men in the movie were the ones who used and abused her so what exactly does looks mean??? Not a single, solitary thing. Life is too short and the eurpean ideal of beauty is clearly over rated and just wrong.
