So what did everybody think of it?

So far... i have to say i'm a bit disappointed with it. I guess i'm just not much of a fan of the animation style, and some of the diologue is a bit cheesy... or kiddish i guess, although, some of it is pretty good too (Hellboy's lines are cool) Story seems alright as well...

So discuss... what did you think of it?

It was damn sweet like licorice and that ain't ain't sweet.

or as the tick would say

Well, folks, there you have it. A day in the life of a superhero and his sidekick. It's a very long day, the tights are uncomfortable; I think we covered that before. Map light, convenient and essential. A lot of working of villain motifs. Crime has a Bossa Nova beat. Leap before you look. Remember denouement. Other French words: inconvenient, nonessential... oh... I could go on and on... But time's a-wasting and evil's out there making hand-crafted mischief for the swap meet of villainy. And you can't strike a good deal with evil. No matter how much you haggle. We don't need to look for a bargain; goodness is cheap because it's free, and free is as cheap as it gets. Cut. What was that red guy about?

Fine I was introduced to hellboy because of this movie. From what I read up on the character designers of Hellboy comics also did the ill welcomed Disney movie Atlantis: the Lost Empire. I could see some similarities to the art style and the movie was a great idea. I loved the background paintings and vibrant colors. They did well with characters and I think animation buffs will love it. Also the whole movie had the some of the humor of a MEGAS XLR episode. What I mean is that the fight scenes were ridiculously funny yet epic and the humor was absurdity. Though the idea of "paranormal investigators" is over played I thought the movie breathed fresh life. Two thumbs and two big toes up for Hellboy Sword of storms, now the sequel.

I agree with all your points. I really can't stand that style of animation--Liz looks like Penny Proud! WTF!?!? Too bad they couldn't have gotten the guys from Batman: The Animated Series, that would have been spectacular... That being said, Hellboy himself *did* look pretty good. I'm glad they went with the goat legs :)

Action/magic stuff was a little over the top for me too. I know it's a comic, but still... Does EVERYTHING have to explode in some massive blast of ectoplasm?

reply

Well, I was flipping back and forth between the movie and a football game, but I enjoyed it. I thought the animation style was a bit to anime-ish, but Hellboy himself looked great, and Pearlman was awesome.

I thought it was pretty good. Hellboy looked good, I didn't think Selma Blair's voice fit the art of her character, the dialogue seemed to switch from childish to teenage-ish (said pissing me off and something else...) which should have just avoided all childish nature. I loved the different villains (spider girl and the heads and the demons) though. Definetely needs changes, but I liked the plot.

WHAT WAS AWESOME:

Kate Corrigan: Peri Gilpin absolutely nailed her, and infused (really needed) vitality into the story. She'd make a fine Kate for live action, too. (Although maybe a touch too glamorous.)

Main character design: Abe and HB were terrific, Liz less so (was it me, or did she look chunkily Hispanic?) Can't wait to buy the toys to add to my HB collection.

Music: Christopher Drake did a really nice job giving a cinematic feel to what must have been a limited budget.

WHAT WAS GOOD:

The Japanese floating heads: Yay! An actual Mike Mignola story, consigned to film/video/whatever.

The story of the shogun's daughter, which was touching, especially Kate's posession (although HB's "can't we all just get along" resolution felt thin.)

Abe and Liz kiss! Yay! (HB and Liz's love story in the movie was simply wrong, and this went some way to redressing the status quo of Abe's feelings for LIz from the comic book.)

BPRD Headquarters: Nice seeing the newly redesigned H.Q. from the comic book.

Doug Jones: did a fine job of subbing for DHP.

WHAT WAS "MEH":

Ron Perlman and Selma Blair's voicework: Perlman sounded like he was sleep walking through it, and Blair came off as a truculent teenager. What happened?

WHAT WAS POOR:

I've been waiting for this for a long time, and I was largely disappointed.

The direction was largely uninspired, with poor choice of camera angles and listless editing. The thing felt long as well: a slender story really stretched to its limits. Which brings us to:

The writing, which was not too great. Could they not have hired Del Toro and Briggs from the movie, simply appealing to their love of the material? The plotting, what there was, stretched a barely-plotted story to its limits, and the whole Liz/Abe subplot really felt like filler. Honestly, they could have told this story in half the time, and what was aside from the main plot just wasn't utilized to its full potential (it's animation: you can show all the storms around the world in more detail, don't just talk about it!) And the dialog simply wasn't good enough. Period.

The art-direction and animation: were wildly inconsistent. Some frames (largely the ones seen on the animation blog) were gorgeous. Other frames, looked like the cheapest cut-price Saturday morning animation I've ever seen. (The BPRD jet flying into the storm almost made me cringe.) Did they run out of time and budget?

On the whole: a "C", or perhaps "C-" from me. I had high hopes for this. I hope the next movie is an improvement.

it wasnt as funny as the "Amazing Screw on Head" pilot, although I did love the "its like being in a cartoon!" thing

I liked everything about it. I'm sorry, but I did. I didn't see anything wrong with it, but that might be because I just wanted to enjoy is. I'm not much of an analyzer when I'm tired, so I didn't do that so much with this show.

P.S. I thought the spider part was creepy. I hate spiders.

I was impressed. Althoug I agree with some of the points here, the animation style for the women made them appear to look like teenagers which they're not supposed to be.

Bender: I'm so depressed, I wish everyone else was dead.

Hubby did a shiver thing during that scene. Big brave man will kill the poor things, but ask him to scoop it up and put it outside and I might as well have asked him to clean the litter box with his bare hands. What a wimp, but I love him anyways.

first i wanna say great quote martian5

the story was a bit boring in the sense that they did things for too long without any buildup or point to anything, and right off the bat liz's lines seemed like she was reading the script for the first time, also, rons lines were said right, just that there should have been more one-liners, or his volume overall neded to be higher. Abe's voice was akward, being that ive only seen the movie and had no pre-established voice, but by the end it made abe seem more of the supporting fighter, not just recon and first to be injured, so it was good.

overall it wasnt bad, but then again, its a stomping ground, im sure those problems will be fixed by the next one

I think it was closer to the spirit and feel of the comics than the live movie was.

i liked it the plot was a bit all over the place.

though it felt to me at times that i was watching an episode of x-men evolution liz looked like x-23.

i give voice acvting good marks all round but romn owned the place as usual.

i real loved the fact that this was showed this on cartoon network and worked in the ah crap catchphrase alot and the other vital bits of swearing which i think a lot of animted programs could do with today.

bring on the next one and hellboy 2

Loved it. Ron and Doug's voices were dead on. Peri Gilpin as Kate was inspired. If Kate is ever brought into the live action movies, Peri should play her. Russell was annoying, but then he was supposed to be.

I did have a problem that in one scene we have Kate and Russell being attacked, we cut to something else going on in the movie and when we get back to Kate and Russell, they're finishing with fighting the bad critters that were attacking them. I hope that scene is longer on the DVD.

Can't wait until the DVD comes out with all of its lovely extras. (Just in time for Valentine's Day, guys)
