Pattinson Remarkable and Understated in this Film (possible spoilers)

I really enjoyed Pattinson's characterization of Toby Jugg in this film. In fact, I've now lost count on the number of times I have watched this DVD version. Pattinson begins at Llanfordack with a nearly blasé attempt toward his fate, but early on, the character's agitation and finally out and out scenes of nightmarish (and believeable) screaming take over. The range of perception for this part never leaves Pattinson's control. His terrifying nights of insomnia are always smoothly in transition with the next day's return to a casual, but resigned melancholia for his fate. // The most interesting scenes for me were those between Pattinson and Sister Grant. I found her character, at first, somewhat matter-of-fact, until I realized toward the end of the film that she, herself, was more than fond of Toby. She does not, however, even though she is fond of Toby, allow it to interfere with her commitment to her profession. She ultimately betrays Toby when she thinks she perceives that he is quite mad (emotionally disturbed) and alerts the attending psychiatrist that Toby believes he (the psychiatrist) is 'ruled by the devil'. This was an extremely sad moment in the film, when you realize that Toby's hope of escape from Llanfordack is no longer an option. // It has already been said, but I belive it bears repeating: Pattinson's range in this film is 'unbounded'. He shows us in this tiny work that he is a powerful and capable, young actor. I certainly enjoyed him in 'Twilight', but I have to say that I saw a much more interesting Pattinson in this role and in his portrayal of Salvador Dali in "Little Ashes".

I LOVED Little Ashes. He's is a remarkable actor. I don't think it's fair to judge him on his twilight roles at all.
