I have not read the book. I bought the DVD as it looked intriguing.

I gather that the creepy doctor and Toby's beautiful aunt were deliberately trying to drive him insane. Terrorizing him with the doctor staring at him from the windows, all those spiders, stealing his letters to his aunt, killing a fellow patient, etc... Toby obviously was haunted by his murdering a child during a bombing raid. He was already deeply shell shocked, but those two drove him mad. Finding his aunt in bed with that doctor drove poor Toby to murder his betraying aunt. Sad.

WHY? What happened to the motive? Was Toby wealthy and they wanted his money?
Has anyone got an answer? Why was the motive excluded from the film? Dumb.

The doctor's ambivilant stance at the end of the flick got me thinking. The doctor embraced the homosexual character,Enfield, briefly and we also saw him touching Toby's fingers during the hypnosis scene. We certainly did not see the doctor in bed with Julia, he was passed out on the floor instead. The doctor wanted Julia dead from the beginning so he could start winning over Toby's mind. He succeeded royally and so did this subtle disturbing little movie.

Um. no. Actually we saw the doctor kissing the aunt and asking her to come back to the room where they obviously shared the bed. Believe me or not, but not all people are gay.
